KUTZTOWN – East Stroudsburg University finished its 2012 softball season with a pair of setbacks at No. 4-ranked Kutztown on Saturday, falling 5-2 and 7-3 in PSAC East action as the Golden Bears improved to 43-2 on the year.
The Warriors battled back to score two runs off starter Samantha Derr (25-0) in the sixth inning before falling in the opener. They took an early 2-0 lead on Mary Kociencki (10-1) in the first inning of game two, only to see Kutztown come back with six runs over the next two innings to pull away.
ESU (12-29, 5-11) finishes fifth in the PSAC East after entering the weekend in contention for one of the division's three conference tournament berths. The Warriors dropped a doubleheader to West Chester on Friday at Zimbar Field before heading to Kutztown, one of the PSAC Tournament favorites, on Saturday. Shippensburg (#2 seed) and West Chester join KU in the postseason.
ESU managed three hits off Derr in game 1, including 2-for-3 game by senior 3B
Rachel Gieringer. The former PSAC East Freshman of the Year finished her career ranked in ESU's career top 10 in 10 offensive categories, including second in home runs (17) and RBI (85). She had a career .339 average and hit .355 with five homers and 25 RBI as a senior.
Seniors accounted for six of ESU's seven hits in game 2, with SS

Brittany Zanzalari and 2B
Brandi Stettler also collecting hits. Schubert had ESU's other hit in the opener.
The Warriors took their 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out double by Zanzalari after Sellers singled with one out and Schubert singled with two outs.
Kutztown came back to score four in the bottom of the first on three hits and two errors, including a two-RBI single by Derr. They got two more runs, both unearned, in the second and finished their scoring with a run in the sixth. Five of KU's seven runs were unearned as ESU committed six errors after going error-free in the first game.
GAME NOTES
* Gieringer ranks 9th at ESU in batting average (.339), 9th in on-base percentage (.395) and 6th in slugging percentage (.505). She is also 5th in hits (161), tied for 6th in extra-base hits (44), 5th in total bases (240), 2nd in home runs (17), 8th in runs (76), 2nd in RBI (85) and tied for 8th in hit by pitches (8).
* Schubert ranks 10th with 8 career home runs, hitting 4 in both of her seasons at ESU.
* Zanzalari is in the top 20 with 17 career doubles and ranks 3rd with 797 putouts.
* Sellers had 115 assists as a sophomore in 2010, second-most in school history. She was limited to 16 games this year due to injury.
* Gieringer hit .355 this season and also led ESU with 25 RBI and 24 runs. Schubert was second in batting (.327) and tied for 2nd with Zanzalari with 21 RBI.
* Stettler hit .286, a career-high, and drove in 13 runs.

Rebecca Smith, who missed the last three games due to injury, hit .305 with 4 home runs, 18 RBI and 21 runs scored. Her .473 slugging percentage was third among ESU regulars.

Marianne Wright finished as the team leader with a 2.65 ERA. Freshman
Taylor Webb (4.65 ERA) had team-highs with 77 strikeouts and 81.1 innings pitched.
