PHILADELPHIA – Junior Corinne Fitzgerald lowered her own school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:41.72 on Thursday night at the 118th annual Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Fitzgerald's time ranks 10th on the NCAA Division II provisional list and breaks her previous record of 10:43.90, which she set as a sophomore at Bucknell.
An NCAA Championships participant last spring, Fitzgerald posted a time of 10:58.15 earlier this year at Lafayette. She placed eighth in a field of 23 and was the top non-Division I finisher after running 10:59.67 at Penn last year.
Junior Rose Mascoli also hit the NCAA provisional standard in the Championship 5000m, running 17:08.27, second-best in the PSAC this season. Mascoli, an All-American in the 5K and 10K last year, is also in the top five in the PSAC in the 3K and 10K and was second in the Championship 10,000m at last year's Penn Relays.
The women's 4x400m relay was fourth in its heat in 3:58.54 with sophomore Colleen Murphy (58.9), junior Lauren Ventrella (58.3), freshman Imani Rosario (62.7) and freshman Danielle Smith (58.4) running ESU's fastest time this spring.
Two underclassmen made their Penn Relays debuts on Thursday. Sophomore Laura Beimfohr, who set the school record in the pole vault last week at 11-7 1/4, cleared her opening height of 10-11 3/4 on her second attempt. Freshman Christina O'Connor cleared 5-3 and 5-4 1/2 in the high jump after hitting a career-best 5-5 3/4 last week.
Three relays will take center stage on Friday. The men's 4x200 will run at 1:50 p.m., the women's 4x200 is on at 2:10 p.m. and the men's 4x400 relay will go after its third straight Wetzler/Pennsylvania title at 5:25 p.m.
