ALLENTOWN – Sophomore Laura Beimfohr broke her own school record in the pole vault and East Stroudsburg University athletes combined for eight individual and five relay victories at the Muhlenberg Invitational on Saturday.

Beimfohr cleared 11-6 1/4, besting her previous mark of 11-3 3/4 that she set at last year's PSAC Championships. Her clearance is just off the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard. She also holds the school indoor record at 11-9 3/4.

Beimfohr was one of six individual winners for the women's team, which also won the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The men's team had two winners and swept the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

Freshman Danielle Smith continued her strong outdoor season in the 100m dash, winning in 12.59 seconds after running 12.40 in the prelims. Smith set the school record in 12.09 seconds in the season opener at Lynchburg last month. Sophomore Rachel Pierantozzi was second in the prelims in 12.85 and sat out the finals.

Junior Lauren Ventrella, who lowered her own school record in the 100m hurdles to 14.72 seconds last week at Lafayette, won in a time of 15.04.

Smith and Ventrella also ran on both of the wining relays. Ventrella, sophomore Nicole Brown, Pierantozzi and Smith won the 4x100 in 49.42 seconds, and sophomore Colleen Murphy, Brown, Smith and Ventrella won the 4x400 in 4:06.40. Murphy was also second in the open 400 in 1:00.45 and sophomore Kim Wernerspach was fourth in the 800 in 2:21.36.

The women had four winners in the field events in Beimfohr, senior Devyn Emerich (high jump – 5-3 3/4), sophomore Elizabeth Madden (hammer – 145-5) and freshman Liana Ercan (discus – 117-11).

Junior Lauren Hannan was third in the triple jump at 35-11 1/4, the seventh-best mark in school history. She had a PR by more than a foot over her mark of 34-7 1/2 at Lynchburg on March 17.

The men's winners were freshman Derrick Washington in the 400m hurdles (56.17) and junior Kyle Soden in the high jump (6-4 3/4).

The Warriors swept the second through fifth spots in the 100m dash in senior Ian Melhorn (10.89), freshman Brandon Mercer (10.93), sophomore Keith Parker-Washington (10.98) and freshman Robert Fearon (11.25). Parker-Washington ran the sprint for the first time this season and broke 11 seconds for the first time in his career and also had a PR of nearly a foot in finishing third in the long jump (22-1). Melhorn had the top time of 10.91 in the 100m dash prelims.

Mercer, Parker-Washington, Fearon and Melhorn won the 4x100 relay in 41.86 seconds. Freshmen Kyle Rickard, Brett Yeomans, Matthew Sandroski and Julian Franklin were second in 42.59.

Rickard, Washington, Parker-Washington and freshman Damien Boham took the 4x400 relay in 3:23.73. In the 4x800 relay, senior Sam Janssen, freshman Steve Ruch, junior Mike Saparito and junior Amr Aldeen won in 8:04.93. Saparito (3:59.78) and Janssen (4:00.18) were second and third in the 1500.

Junior Matt Tholis, who hit the fifth-best mark in Division II in the javelin (209-4) at Lafayette last week, was second in 195-1 on Saturday. Freshman Travis Toth was third in the hammer (145-7) and discus (138-1) and freshman Casey Ciaston was third in the shot put (45-5 1/4).

In the triple jump, freshman Donovan Tolbert recorded a mark of 46-0 1/2 to place third one week after going 45-8 1/2 in his ESU debut.

The Warriors will send athletes to Bucknell and Bloomsburg next weekend with three weeks remaining before the PSAC Championships, which will be held May 3-5 at Bloomsburg. ESU will host its annual All-American Meet on April 21 and travel to Lehigh and the Penn Relays the following weekend.
