EAST STROUDSBURG – Slippery Rock pitchers held East Stroudsburg University to eight hits and one earned run as the Rock took both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader, 2-1 and 5-1, at Zimbar Field on Saturday afternoon.

Slippery Rock (10-11) managed just 12 hits and two earned runs off ESU (9-22) pitching, but Shaylee Ianno threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts in game one and Ashley Knight tossed a five-hitter with eight strikeouts in game two. Ianno also homered in the second game.

Senior 3B/DP Rachel Gieringer hit a solo home run, the 16th of her career, for ESU in the opener to move within two homers of tying the school record. (ESU Record Book)

Freshman Taylor Webb matched Ianno almost pitch for pitch through the opener, but the Rock scored on a walk, wild pitch, single and sacrifice fly to tie the game in the fifth. A leadoff walk to Ianno and an error led to the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

ESU got the tying run in scoring position in the seventh when freshman SS Jamie Smith hit a one-out single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by freshman OF Kacie Killeen, but Ianno got a line drive out to end the game.

Webb recorded her third complete game this season and surrendered five hits, one earned run, struck out three and walked three in the circle.

In the second game, Ianno's homer to start the second inning gave the Rock a 1-0 lead and they added four more runs in the frame, all unearned, to take a 5-0 advantage including a bases clearing double by leadoff hitter Katie Saluga.

ESU capitalized on a walk by freshman OF Cara Woods and two errors to get one run back in the third, but Knight gave up just three hits the rest of the way. The Warriors had back-to-back singles by senior C Alex Schubert and senior 2B Brandi Stettler in the sixth, but Knight got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Freshman Marianne Wright threw her third complete game of the season and gave up just one earned run on seven hits. She struck out two and walked two, and also got all three outs in the seventh inning, including a strikeout, in game one.

Gieringer was 2-for-3 in the first game to become the sixth player in ESU history with 150 career hits. Five different players had a hit in the second game.

ESU opens the second half of PSAC East play on Tuesday at Shippensburg after splitting a home doubleheader with the Lady Raiders on March 23. The Warriors are 3-5 in divisional play, tied for third with Millersville and a game ahead of West Chester. Kutztown, ranked No. 5 nationally, is 36-1 and 8-0 in the PSAC East, while Shippensburg is 4-4.
