BLOOMSBURG – Juniors Rose Mascoli and Corinne Fitzgerald ran second and third in the women's 10,000m and senior Greg Laraia placed third in the men's 10K as East Stroudsburg University got off to a strong start at the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Bloomsburg.

Mascoli, an All-American last year who was sixth in the PSAC in the 10K as a freshman, tied her best-ever finish at the PSAC Championships with her runner-up showing in a time of 36:43.42. She was second in the 3K last year and will also compete in the 3K, where she is seeded fifth, and 1500m on Saturday.

Fitzgerald, the top seed entering Saturday's 3000m steeplechase, had her top PSAC finish to date, finishing third behind Mascoli in 37:03.38. The time is a 55-second PR and the sixth-best in school history.

In the men's 10K, Laraia – seeded 13th – scored in the PSAC Championships for the first time in his career, running a 35-second PR of 31:05.80. His time is the seventh-best in school history and third-best since 1985. He was less than a half-second behind Lock Haven's Alex Monroe, who finished in 31:05.31.

The Warriors' multi-event athletes also got underway on Thursday, with senior Dan Johnson second in the decathlon and sophomore Theresa Horn fifth in the heptathlon through the first day of competition.

Johnson, the PSAC indoor champion in the heptathlon, finished the day with 3,484 points, 32 behind the leader Derick Fiedler of Slippery Rock. He trailed the leader by 13 points through the first day of the heptathlon in February before posting a winning margin of 166 points.

He ran PR's in the 100m dash (11.64) and 400m (50.55), where he paced the field. He also had the top mark in the high jump (6-4 3/4), had the second-best mark in the shot put (38-9) and went 20-2 1/4 in the long jump. Johnson also has the top mark in the open high jump entering the meet at 6-6, which will be contested on Saturday.

Horn has 2,392 points in the heptathlon with four of the seven events completed. She ran a PR in the 100m hurdles (16.81) and cleared 5-3 1/4 in the high jump, tied for the best in the field. Horn was ranked fourth in the heptathlon entering the meet and is also ranked seventh in the open high jump. She placed eighth in the pentathlon during the indoor season.

Friday will feature the conclusion of the multis, prelims in the sprint events, the men's and women's 5K finals and finals in several field events (men's/women's long jump, women's high jump, women's pole vault, men's/women's hammer and men's/women's shot put).
