EAST STROUDSBURG - Emily Kohlbus scored her first two goals of the season in the first half as No. 1-ranked Shippensburg survived No. 10 East Stroudsburg University's upset bid for a 3-1 win in non-conference field hockey on Saturday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Neither team led by more than a goal until the final two minutes, when Lauren Taylor gave Shippensburg its final 3-1 cushion with the only goal of the second half. The Lady Raiders (7-0) held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the second half after holding a slim 8-7 edge in the opening half.
Kohlbus opened the scoring for Shippensburg 13 minutes into the game but the Warriors (3-3) answered right back, as sophomore forward
Jessica Lawville scored her seventh goal of the season just two minutes after Ship went in front.
Kohlbus scored again four minutes later, giving Shippensburg a 2-1 lead 20 minutes into the game that they would take into halftime.
Freshman
Alexis Charles started in goal for ESU and made two saves before being relieved by senior
Sarah Dobroskey, who played the final 44 minutes and made nine saves. Careena Neely had six saves for Shippensburg.
The Warriors, who were coming off a 5-2 win over No. 9 Mansfield on Friday, play three PSAC East games in the next 10 days. They host Kutztown on Wednesday at 4 p.m., travel to Bloomsburg next Saturday and host defending national champion West Chester on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
