The Warriors notched their first win of the season after a 1-1 tie with host Concord on Saturday, keyed by the game-tying goal with 1:28 left by sophomore forward
Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer.
On Sunday, ESU beat a Tusculum team that was 10-7-2 last season and picked third in the strong South Atlantic Conference. Tusculum was coming off a 2-1 (OT) win over Kutztown, which was picked third in this year's PSAC coaches poll.
Julian scored just past the midpoint of the first half, giving ESU the lead with an unassisted goal at the 24:35 mark. An NSCAA All-Atlantic Region second team pick last year, Julian had four goals and two assists in her first season at ESU after transferring from Division I Towson.
The score remained 1-0 until both teams scored in the final five minutes. Hughes scored her first collegiate goal with 4:02 remaining to give ESU a 2-0 lead, which was cut in half with just 10 seconds left when Courtney Hackney ended the shutout.
Junior goalkeeper
Brittain Wagner made six saves, including four in the second half, as ESU was outshot 6-1 in the final 45 minutes. Hughes' goal accounted for the Warriors' only second half shot. Tusculum held an 8-5 edge in shots for the game and Marissa Williams made two saves.
ESU begins its 14-game PSAC schedule on Wednesday at Mansfield. The Warriors have just two non-conference games remaining this season, hosting Molloy on Sept. 18 and traveling to Mercy on Sept. 25.
