ESU Women’s Basketball Falls at Slippery Rock, 58-46

SLIPPERY ROCK - Slippery Rock ended the game on a 27-8 run over the final 12:45 to post a 58-46 win over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC women's basketball on Friday night at Morrow Field House.

D'Asia Chambers had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Slippery Rock (3-9, 2-6), which had its second win in its last 11 games. Erica Aiello had 11 points, Emilee Vitez had 10 points and eight rebounds and Erinne Cunningham added 10 points as SRU ended a four-game losing streak against the Warriors.

Sophomore forward Jessica Martin had 11 points and six rebounds to lead ESU (4-8, 3-5), which had its third straight loss after a three-game PSAC winning streak from December 8 through December 19. The Warriors dropped home games against PSAC West powers IUP and California last weekend at Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU opened the second half on a 12-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 38-31, with 15:22 left. The Warriors managed just eight points the rest of the way and Slippery Rock had an 18-2 run to go ahead 49-40 with 4:30 left as part of its finish.

ESU shot 34.6 percent (18-52) from the field, 3-for-19 from the three-point line and 7-for-14 at the foul line while committing 27 turnovers.

Slippery Rock shot 37.7 percent (20-53) overall, 4-for-19 from long distance and 14-for-19 at the foul line while turning it over 23 times.

Sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki had nine points, senior forward Fayola Moise had eight points and junior guard Andrea Veres added six points for ESU. Junior forward Halie Cintron had five points and six rebounds off the bench.

Slippery Rock opened the game on a 10-1 run, but ESU scored the next 12 points to take a 13-10 advantage with 8:34 left in the first half. Slippery Rock answered with the next seven and led 28-26 going into halftime.

Fiascki started the second half with a three-pointer and senior guard Barb Borst added a triple in the Warriors' 12-3 spurt that put them in front by seven (38-31). The Rock scored 11 straight before Martin scored to cut the deficit to 42-40 with 7:40 left, but those would be the Warriors' only points in a 12-minute stretch.

Slippery Rock led 49-40 before Moise and Veres scored back-to-back baskets to get ESU within 49-44 with 1:28 left. The Rock went 9-for-10 at the foul line to close the game.

ESU plays Saturday night at Edinboro (9-3, 6-2), which was a game behind PSAC West leader Gannon before falling to Kutztown, 46-40, on Friday night.
