Warriors Women’s Basketball Uses Late Run to Post 66-59 Win at Mansfield

MANSFIELD - Sophomore forward Jessica Martin had 13 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four blocks and East Stroudsburg University broke open a close game with a 14-0 run in the final eight minutes as the Warriors posted a 66-59 win at Mansfield in PSAC East women's basketball Wednesday at Decker Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki led the Warriors with 14 points (10 in the second half), sophomore forward Kelsey Murray tied her career-high with 10 and junior guard Andrea Veres had nine after tying her career-high with 22 in the Warriors last game at Edinboro. Martin had 11 of her 13 in the second half as the Warriors outscored Mansfield, 41-32.

ESU (5-9, 4-6) ended a four-game losing streak going into Saturday's game at Kutztown. The Warriors had a 42-32 advantage in rebounds and had 12 steals and seven blocks on the defensive end, led by Martin's effort.

Alyssa DeRichie scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the first half and had nine rebounds, and Megan McSwain had 14 points to lead Mansfield (4-10, 2-10).

The Mounties led 27-25 at halftime and 44-41 with 9:39 left, but the Warriors closed with a 25-15 run in the closing minutes.

Veres put ESU ahead 45-44 with a second-chance basket with 8:25 left, and senior forward Fayola Moise (five points, seven rebounds) hit two free throws just four seconds later after tracking down an offensive rebound.

Martin followed with a three-pointer and Veres had a fastbreak layup for a 52-44 lead to close an 11-0 blitz in just 1:44.

Senior guard Barb Borst finished the 14-0 run with a three-pointer that put the Warriors in front 55-44 with just over five minutes left.

Fiascki scored six of the Warriors' last nine points, including going 4-for-4 at the foul line down the stretch. Fiascki, second in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 87.0 (40-46) entering the game, went 6-for-6 to improve to 88.5 percent on the season.

In the first half, ESU opened leads of 8-3 and 17-10 before Mansfield came back to lead by two (27-25) at intermission. The Mounties held their biggest lead of the game at 27-21 with 2:40 left before Murray and Veres scored to close the half.

Junior guard Halie Cintron hit a three-pointer to put ESU ahead 17-10 and had six points and six rebounds. Borst added five points and freshman center Michelle Boggs had four points and two rebounds.

Martin was one rebound short of her fourth double-double of the season. She became the fourth player in school history with 100 career block shots, finishing with 101 in her 40th career game.

Martin set the PSAC freshman record with 76 last season, leading the PSAC with 2.9 per game, and was tied for fifth in the PSAC at 1.6 per game entering Wednesday night.

The Warriors are at Kutztown on Saturday for the third of their 14 PSAC East games.
