Martin Has ESU Record Nine Blocked Shots in 74-55 Loss to Shippensburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore forward Jessica Martin set a school record with nine blocked shots and added eight points and 11 rebounds in East Stroudsburg University's 74-55 loss to Shippensburg in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Martin, who set a PSAC freshman record with 76  blocks last season, is the first PSAC player with at least nine blocks in a game since 2003. Her mark is tied for sixth in conference history.

Sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki scored a season-high 15 points, junior guard Andrea Veres scored 12 and senior forward Fayola Moise added eight points and seven rebounds for ESU (5-12, 4-9), which has dropped seven of its last eight.

Sarah Strybuc had 15 points and five assists, Caitlyn Deeter scored 10 points and Alex Gildea had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Shippensburg (12-6, 8-5). Stephanie Knauer (nine points, six rebounds) and Dana Wert (eight points, three assists) also contributed for the Lady Raiders, who played without two starters.

Shippensburg led 38-23 at halftime, closing the half on a 10-2 run over the final 6:11. Ship opened the second half with a 19-4 stretch to take its largest lead at 57-29 with just under 10 minutes left.

Martin entered the day with seven five-block games and moved into third in school history with 114 career blocks in 43 games. She is two blocks behind Tonia Lloyd (116, 1986-90) for second-most in school history. She led the PSAC and was tied for ninth in Division II with 2.9 blocks per game last season, and is averaging 2.2 per game this year.

Martin is averaging 12.8 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 4.3 blocks over the last four games, including double-doubles in each of the previous two – 15 points, 15 rebounds at Kutztown and 15 points, 13 rebounds vs. Millersville.

Shippensburg shot 37.1 percent (23-for-62) for the game and 25.8 percent (8-for-31) in the second half, when Martin had seven of her nine blocks. The PSAC's third-best free throw shooting team was 23-for-29 at the foul line.

ESU shot 28.3 percent (17-for-60) from the field and 19-for-28 at the foul line. The Warriors had 12 steals and 12 blocks, the most at the school in at least 10 seasons.

The Warriors are on the road for two games next week with trips to Bloomsburg and West Chester. Bloomsburg, ranked No. 21 in this week's USA Today poll, fell to West Chester 65-59 on Saturday to end an 18-game home court winning streak at Nelson Field House.
