NEWBERRY, S.C. – Returning national qualifiers
Brendan McKeown (174) and
Braden Turner (157) both had key regional wins against No. 4-ranked Newberry as East Stroudsburg University wrapped up this weekend's Super Region 1 Duals in South Carolina.
McKeown went 3-0 on the weekend, improving to 11-1 (7-1 DII), including a 9-5 decision over Newberry's Travis Sheehy, ranked second in SR1. McKeown came in ranked fifth in the region and avenged an 11-4 setback to Sheehy in the SR1 final last year. He opened the day with a first-period pin against Jacob Allen of Anderson and won by technical fall against Ohio Valley on Friday night.
Turner, ranked No. 6 in Division II, won a 4-0 decision over No. 4-ranked Taylor Knapp in a rematch of his 4-3 decision over Knapp in last year's SR1 semifinals. Knapp is ranked first and Turner second in the most recent regional rankings.
He went 2-1 on the day to run his record to 12-5 (9-1 vs. DII competition), suffering his first DII loss of the season by technical fall to No. 3 Bobby Williams (Ouachita Baptist) in a rematch of Williams' 6-3 decision in last year's fifth-place match at the NCAA Championships with both earning All-America honors.
The Warriors went 2-2 on the weekend, with a 35-9 win over Ohio Valley, 33-15 win over Anderson (S.C.), 39-6 loss to #4 Newberry and 36-9 loss to Ouachita Baptist (Ark.).
Freshman
Tyson Searer was also undefeated at 3-0 on the weekend, improving to 12-6 (10-2 DII). Searer, ranked No. 5 in the nation at 197 pounds, won both of his bouts on Saturday by decision – 6-1 over Anderson's Scott Richardson, and 3-1 over Ouachita Baptist's Seth Calvert.
Redshirt sophomore
Luke DeLuise (184) is 9-8 on the season after going 1-2 this weekend. He pinned Anderson's Zackery Farmer in 1:33 for his team-leading seventh pin of the season before losing by major decision to Newberry's regionally-ranked Jared Holliday and Ouachita Baptist's No. 3 nationally-ranked Dallas Smith.
ESU won six of the nine bouts contested against Anderson. Freshman
Joe Welk (149) had his first career dual pin, decking Dennis Rhodes in 2:40, followed by a decision by Turner at 157, pins by McKeown (174) and DeLuise (184), a decision from Searer at 197, and a 12-7 decision by redshirt senior
Joe Blaes at 285.
Newberry matted nine regionally-ranked and five nationally-ranked wrestlers in their bout with the Warriors. ESU's only points came from Turner and McKeown.
The Warriors picked up their victories against Ouachita Baptist with a decision from Searer at 197 and by forfeit from Blaes at 285.
ESU (5-7) hosts Millersville in a PSAC dual on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
