SHIPPENSBURG – No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Shippensburg scored three goals in the final 20 minutes to notch a 3-0 win over No. 8 East Stroudsburg University in PSAC field hockey on Tuesday afternoon.
ESU (7-10, 4-5) will play for a potential spot in the PSAC Tournament on Saturday at Kutztown (7-9, 3-6) on the final day of the regular season. A PSAC postseason berth would be the Warriors' second since 2003, following a runner-up finish in 2010.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Charles made a career-high 14 saves as the Warriors were outshot 25-3 and outcornered 13-1. The Lady Raiders (16-0, 9-0) had a 17-1 advantage in shots in the second half.
Taylor Bender gave Shippensburg the lead with 19:49 left, Lauren Taylor scored just under two minutes later and Brittany Jett added the final goal with 6:51 remaining. Carenna Neely made two saves for Ship.
Shippensburg was ranked No. 1 in Division II for the fifth time in last six meetings between the two schools. ESU knocked off Ship, 2-1, in the PSAC semifinals in 2010, which marked the program's first PSAC Tournament trip since 2002 and the Warriors' last win in the series.
Four of the PSAC's six playoff spots are taken by Shippensburg, Millersville, West Chester and Bloomsburg, which clinched with a 2-1 (OT) win at IUP on Tuesday.
Four schools are in contention for the final two spots entering Saturday – ESU (4-5), Mercyhurst (4-5), IUP (4-5) and Kutztown (3-6). ESU is at Kutztown, Mercyhurst hosts Bloomsburg and IUP hosts Millersville.
The ESU-Kutztown and IUP-Millersville games will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Mercyhurst-Bloomsburg is slated for 5 p.m.
PSAC Tournament scenario: ESU would clinch a PSAC Tournament spot with a victory on Saturday at Kutztown, and be eliminated from contention with a loss.
The Warriors would advance as the No. 5 seed if tied with Mercyhurst at 5-5, and as the No. 6 seed if tied with IUP at 5-5, and as the No. 6 seed if tied with both IUP and Mercyhurst - IUP would be the No. 5 seed in that scenario.
ESU would not advance in any tiebreaker scenarios with a 4-6 record.
