Wernerspach Places 74th for Warriors at 2013 NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. - East Stroudsburg University senior Kim Wernerspach finished 74th of 244 runners at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, held Saturday at the Plante's Ferry Athletic Complex.

Wernerspach ran the 6K course in 22:24.5 and was the third ESU women's runner to compete at the NCAA Championships in four years, following All-America Rose Mascoli in 2010 and Corinne Fitzgerald in 2011.

Wernerspach was previously sixth in the Atlantic Regional two weeks ago at Lock Haven, running 21:03.5 to set ESU's record for a 6K course. She was eighth at the PSAC Championships at Kutztown last month.

The PSAC had four All-Americans (top 40 finishers) in Bloomsburg's Victoria Davis, Mansfield's Sarah Krolick and Mansfield's Jessica Scordino and Lauren Norton.

Mansfield was the conference's top team finisher, placing ninth overall, followed by Edinboro (13th), IUP (17th) and Shippensburg (22nd).

Wernerspach ran the first 3000m in 11:15.0 and finished in 11:09.5, picking up nine spots over the second half of the course.

Fitzgerald ran 23:19.2 in snowy conditions on the same course two years ago, placing 80th of 186 runners.

Wernerspach was the eighth ESU women's runner to compete individually at the NCAA Championships. The Warriors have had five All-Americans in Laura Mason (1982), Jan Blake (1996), Tina Vosper (1998), Vanessa Andes (2003-04) and Mascoli (2010).
