Women
LOCK HAVEN – Senior
Kim Wernerspach qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships with a sixth-place finish to lead East Stroudsburg University's cross country programs at the Atlantic Regional, held Saturday at Lock Haven.
Wernerspach ran a time of 21:03.5 to set ESU's school record for a 6K race. She will compete in the NCAA Championships in two weeks, on November 23 in Spokane, Washington.
Wernerspach gives the Warriors' women's program an NCAA qualifier for the third time in four years.
Rose Mascoli was an All-American in 2010, and
Corinne Fitzgerald was a national qualifier in 2011.
ESU's men's team finished seventh in the field of 19 schools led by junior
Chris Schneider, who was 28th in 32:06. Junior
Steve Ruch (34th – 32:23.5) and sophomore
Dan Davis (36th – 32:24.4) also ran in the top 50. Schneider was the only returning scorer from last year's team which tied for second and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1989.
The women were 11th in a field of 22. Sophomore
Chelsea Conover ran 34th as ESU's No. 2 runner, finishing in 22:02.7.
Lock Haven, Edinboro and Shippensburg advance to the NCAA Championships on the men's side, with Lock Haven's Alex Monroe winning the individual title in 29:31.3 – 21 seconds ahead of California's Aaron Dinzeo.
Four teams – Edinboro, Mansfield, IUP and Shippensburg – advance on the women's side. Bloomsburg's Victoria Davis the title in 20:45.0, edging Sarah Krolick of Edinboro. Davis, Alexandra Zanella (California) and Wernerspach all advance to the NCAA Championships individually.
