Warriors Basketball Hosts Lock Haven Wednesday Night

EAST STROUDSBURG - Three players scored in double figures and sophomore guard Helena Gemmell had seven points, five rebounds, five assists and nine steals as East Stroudsburg University improved to 4-2 (2-1 PSAC East) with a 75-67 win over Lock Haven in PSAC East women's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Junior guard Ryann Fiascki scored 16 points, freshman forward Allison Howard scored 14 and junior forward Jessica Martin had 12 points and eight rebounds for ESU, which used a 17-3 run in just over six minutes spanning halftime to pull away from the Lady Eagles (1-6, 1-3).

ESU trailed 24-22 with 3:05 left in the first half, but closed the period with a 9-3 spurt, then opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take control. The Warriors scored 25 points off 25 Lock Haven turnovers and had 17 steals.

Gemmell, who led PSAC freshmen with 2.7 steals per game last year, had five steals in the first half and four more in the second. She had 68 total steals last season, second-most by a freshman in school history, and has 24 steals through six games this year.

Howard, last week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week, shot 6-for-10 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Fiascki was 6-for-7 from the floor, made her only three-pointer and was 3-for-5 at the foul line for a season-high 16 points.

Hannah Gildea scored 12 points and Sami Lane had 10, both off the bench, to pace Lock Haven. Marrysa Moyer, fifth in Division II in rebounding entering the week, had seven points and two boards.

The Warriors led by as many as 22 points (68-46) with 5:16 left and had a 72-52 advantage with 2:41 remaining, before Lock Haven closed the margin late in the game.

ESU travels to Millersville on Saturday.

THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University hosts Lock Haven in tonight's first game at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors are coming off a 2-0 weekend in the 49th Annual Pocono Classic, beating Concordia (N.Y.) 73-42 on Saturday, and Philadelphia U 66-63 on Sunday. ESU (3-2, 1-1) split its first two PSAC East games, topping Mansfield 63-56 on Nov. 20 at Koehler, and falling 59-58 at Kutztown on Nov. 23.

Lock Haven (1-5, 0-2) is looking for its first win since an 82-74 victory at Wilmington in its season opener on Nov. 9. The Lady Eagles' 5 losses have come by a total of 26 points, with 4 by 5 points or less, including a 62-60 setback to Chestnut Hill on Monday on a layup at the buzzer.

ESU won last year's game, 59-56, as Fayola Moise had the go-ahead putback with 1:13 left and blocked a shot in the final 10 seconds. The Warriors have won 5 of the last 6 are are 29-17 overall in the series.

WARRIORS NOTES: Jr. F Jessica Martin was named MVP of the Pocono Classic for the 3rd straight year, with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks vs. Philadelphia U ... Fr. F Allison Howard is this week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week and was also on the All-Tournament team, pouring in a career-high 19 points vs. PhilaU ... Martin leads ESU with 12.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg and is 8th in DII with 3.4 blocks per game ... her 17 blocks are more than 12 of the other 17 schools in the PSAC ... Howard is 2nd on the Warriors with 9.6 ppg and 7.2 rpg ... ESU is 2nd in the PSAC in scoring defense (57.2) and FG% defense (33.9), 1st in blocks (6.0) and 3rd in steals (11.4).

SCOUTING THE LADY EAGLES: Jr. F Marrysa Moyer, a transfer from Mansfield, averages 18.0 ppg and 12.8 rpg ... she was 5th in DII in rebounding entering the week and has 4 straight double-doubles ... R-Jr. G Emily Daugherty scores 17.8 ppg and has hit 16 3-pointers.

EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior guard Whis Grant scored 24 points and freshman forward Rasheed Moore had 20 points and 16 rebounds, leading No. 17-ranked East Stroudsburg University to a 102-87 win over Lock Haven in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Junior guard Matt Tobin had 14 points and six assists, and junior forward Lamont Tillery added a career-high 14 points with seven rebounds for the Warriors, who improved to 7-0 (3-0 PSAC East).

Wali Hepburn had 31 points to lead Lock Haven.

THE MATCH-UP: ESU (6-0, 2-0 PSAC East) hosts Lock Haven (3-2, 1-1) in the nightcap at Koehler. The Warriors enter ranked #17 in this week's NABC DII coaches poll, moving up 6 spots while idle last week. Their national ranking  (#23) on Nov. 26 was the earliest date in school history.

ESU had won 8 straight meetings vs. LHU until last year's 68-58 loss on Dec. 18, its last loss before a single-season, school record-tying 14-game winning streak. This year's 6-0 start is its 4th-best in the last 70 years.

Lock Haven lost by 2 to Davis & Elkins, won by 1 at Nyack, won 78-61 at Shippensburg, lost 62-57 at home to Bloomsburg and won 98-60 at PSU Wilkes-Barre in its first 5 games. The Bald Eagles are looking for their first PSAC Tournament appearance since 1990.
