MECHANICSBURG - East Stroudsburg University placed ninth at the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships, its best finish since placing sixth in 2002, as the conference's four-day meet concluded on Sunday at Cumberland Valley High School.

The Warriors set four more school records on Sunday - junior Allison Schafer (1650 free), sophomore Karoline Vavra (100 free) and freshman Sophie Coy (200 breast) - along with the 800 free relay.

ESU had four swimmers make consolation finals on Sunday, and the 800 free relay of Karoline Vavra, sophomore Mara Palazzari, senior Kimberly Lawson and junior Andrea Tremper was eighth in 3:33.70, breaking their record of 3:35.30 set last year.

Coy was ninth in the 200 breast in 2:24.59, breaking the school record set by senior Sami Vavra (2:25.95) in the prelims. Vavra was 12th in the consolation final in 2:26.16. Coy swam 2:26.04 to place 11th in the prelims.

Karoline Vavra broke her own 100 free record with a time of 53.18 in the prelims. She clocked 53.62 in the consolation finals and was 16th in both sessions. She had the previous record of 53.48 last year.

Lawson made the consolation finals of the 200 back and was 15th in 2:11.97. She was 16th in 2:11.10 in the prelims.

Schafer lowered her own 1650 free record to 18:12.18 after setting it at 18:12.84 earlier this season. She was 22nd in the event.

ESU swimmers set six individual and four relay records over the weekend - Schafer in the 1000 free and 1650 free, Lawson in the 100 fly, Sami Vavra in the 100 breast, Coy in the 200 breast and Karoline Vavra in the 100 free.

The 200, 400 and 800 free relays and 200 medley relays also set records. The Warriors placed in the top nine in all five relays - seventh in the 200 medley, eighth in the 400 and 800 free and 400 medley, and ninth in the 200 free.

Two Warriors made championship finals in Sami Vavra, who was fifth in the 100 breast, and Lawson, who was eighth in the 100 fly. Vavra was eighth in the 100 breast last year. They are the first Warriors to make championship finals since Christine Swiker made three finals in 2010 and two in 2009.

Lawson (100 fly, 100 back, 200 back) and Coy (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM) both scored in three individual events. Schafer (400 IM, 1000 free) and Sami Vavra (100 breast, 200 breast) scored in two each, and Karoline Vavra scored in the 100 free.

The Warriors were sixth in both the 2001 and 2002 PSAC Championships, the program's best finish since fourth in 1987. ESU had placed 10th for four straight seasons (2003-06) and 11th or 12th for the last six seasons.
