West Chester Holds Off ESU Women’s Basketball, 64-52

WEST CHESTER - East Stroudsburg University cut a 19-point deficit to nine points with just over four minutes left, but West Chester held on for a 64-52 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday at Hollinger Field House.

Sophomore forward Jessica Martin had 18 points and eight rebounds, freshman center Michelle Boggs had eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds, and freshman guard Helena Gemmell had four points, a career-high 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Warriors (5-14, 4-11).

Junior guard Andrea Veres added 11 points, including three three-pointers, to become the sixth player in school history with 100 career three-pointers, finishing with 102. Sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki had five points, five rebounds and five assists.

Dallas Ely scored 20 points, going 5-for-6 from the three-point line, and Alex Lennon had 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots to lead West Chester (12-7, 9-6).

West Chester led 28-20 at halftime, with the Warriors cutting the deficit to five points (29-24) as Martin scored ESU's first four points of the second half. The Golden Rams pushed the lead to double figures with a 7-0 run, and held a 54-35 advantage with 6:38 left.

The Warriors closed within 54-45 with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, getting a jumper from Martin, back-to-back three's by Veres and two free throws by Boggs to close the margin to single digits with 3:52 left.

Ely and Veres traded three-pointers as the Warriors trailed 57-48 at the 3:21 mark, but were unable to get any closer as Lennon scored consecutive baskets for the Golden Rams.

ESU held a 49-40 rebounding advantage and had 14 assists on 21 made field goals. The Warriors shot 31.8 percent (21-for-66) with five three-pointers.

West Chester shot 36.7 percent (22-for-60) overall but was 10-for-23 from the three-point line, including six in the first 14 minutes of the contest.

ESU returns to Koehler Fieldhouse for a three-game homestand, beginning Wednesday against Cheyney at 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES
* ESU had two players with 10+ rebounds in the same game (Boggs 11, Gemmell 11) for the first time since Martin had 20 and Fayola Moise had 18 in a double-overtime win at Kutztown last season (February 4).
