West Chester Pulls Away Late for 59-45 Win over ESU Women’s Basketball

EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University stayed within striking distance the entire way, but West Chester closed the game on a 14-5 run to come away with a 59-45 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

ESU (7-18, 6-15), which will be on the road for the first round of the PSAC  Tournament next Saturday, finishes the regular season on Wednesday against PSAC East co-leader Bloomsburg. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Freshman center Michelle Boggs tied her career-high with 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Warriors, with sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki adding nine points, four rebounds and three assists and junior guard Halie Cintron scoring seven points off the bench, all in the first half. Senior forward Fayola Moise had four points and seven rebounds.

ESU closed the first half on a 14-3 run, including three-pointers by Cintron and junior guard Andrea Veres, over the final 7:30 to pull within 25-24 at intermission.

West Chester (14-11, 11-10) scored the first eight points of the second half, answered by eight straight by ESU, to make it 33-32 with 15 minutes left in regulation. The Golden Rams pushed their lead to eight (45-37) before Boggs hit one-of-two at the line and had a putback to cut the deficit to 45-40 with just over seven minutes left.

ESU got within 49-43 when Moise scored on a driving layup with 4:24 left, but West Chester managed to pull away from there, scoring the next five points to open a double-figure margin.

Ambreelinne Ortman had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Alex Lennon, the nation's second-leading shot blocker, had 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks for the Golden Rams. Brittany Sicinski added five points and 11 boards.

Wednesday's games will determine ESU's first-round opponent in the PSAC Tournament. The Warriors are the No. 6 seed and will play at the No. 3 seed, currently Shippensburg (19-7, 15-6). Bloomsburg (20-5, 16-5) and Millersville (19-6, 16-5) share the top spot, followed by Kutztown (14-11, 12-9), which will be the No. 4 seed, and West Chester, which is seeded No. 5.
