Sierra Wagner went 6-for-12 with a home run to lead East Stroudsburg University in its softball season opener last weekend at the Catawba Invitational.
The Warriors played three games on Sunday, falling to Winston-Salem (11-2), Lenoir-Rhyne (6-1) and No. 4-ranked North Georgia (8-4), and finished with a 10-3 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday. All three opponents have winning records and have played at least 13 games this season.
Sophomore
Cara McNeil also hit over .300 on the weekend at .308 (4-for-13) with two RBI, and junior
Rebecca Smith was 3-for-11 (.273) with two doubles and two runs.
Winston-Salem 11, ESU 2
Winston-Salem scored three runs in the second, three in the fifth and five in the seventh in ESU's season opener.
Junior
Laura Suits got the start and gave up three earned runs (eight total) in 6.0 innings, with freshman
Allison Mende getting all three outs in the seventh.
The Warriors scored in the fourth, when Wagner hit a leadoff single and later scored on a fielders choice by sophomore
Cara Woods. They got another in the sixth as Wagner led off with a single, and Smith later scored on a base hit by senior
Jennifer Denaro.
Wagner had two of ESU's five hits.
Lenoir-Rhyne 6, ESU 1
The Warriors scored in the first when freshman
Kellie Mignoli reached on a passed ball to lead off the game and came around on a fielders choice by sophomore
Cara McNeil.
Lenoir-Rhyne answered with four in the first, one in the second and one in the fifth. Freshman
Amanda Carlin threw a complete game in her first career start, allowing two earned runs (six total) in 6.0 innings.
ESU had three hits, coming from Wagner, junior
Amanda McKay and freshman
Haley Thomas.
No. 4 North Georgia 8, ESU 4
North Georgia took a 5-0 lead into the top of the sixth, when ESU scored on a two-run double by Thomas to drive home Woods and McNeil.
North Georgia came back with three in the sixth, and the Warriors scored two more in the top of the seventh. Smith had an RBI double and McNeil added an RBI single to finish the scoring.
Carlin (4.1 IP, 5 runs, 3 earned) and Suits (1.2 IP, 3 runs, 0 earned) did the pitching. Smith and McNeil both had two of ESU's eight hits.
Lenoir-Rhyne 10, ESU 3
The Warriors scored runs in the first, second and third innings but Lenoir-Rhyne produced 10 runs in the first four frames to finish the trip.
Wagner was 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot and McNeil went 2-for-4. Wagner led off the game with a home run, Thomas scored on a passed ball in the second and Smith scored on a double-play ball in the third.
Suits got all 18 outs, with Carlin pitching to two batters in relief.
