WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior catcher Rebecca Smith hit a two-run homer in the first inning and sophomore 1B Cara McNeil had a go-ahead two-out RBI single in the sixth inning to give East Stroudsburg a 3-2 win in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Winston-Salem State on Tuesday.

Smith was 4-for-6 on the day and homered for the third time in the last five games. She was 3-for-3 in Winston-Salem's 2-0 win in the opener. ESU is 1-2 against WSSU this year as the Rams posted an 11-2 win in ESU's season opener on February 24 in Salisbury, N.C.

Junior Laura Suits threw a complete game in the nightcap. She scattered eight hits, leaving nine runners on base, and had six strikeouts and two walks for ESU (7-6).

Smith went deep after freshman OF Sierra Wagner led off with a single to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

Winston-Salem (16-12) left the bases loaded in the first but tied it at 2-2 in the second. They threatened again in the third, with runners on first and second and nobody out, but Suits got a strikeout and a double play to get out of the inning.

The Warriors took the lead in the top of the sixth as sophomore 2B Jamie Smith hit a one-out single, moved up on a groundout by Rebecca Smith and scored on McNeil's two-out single.

Winston-Salem threatened in the last two innings but couldn't plate the tying run. They had a one-out double in the sixth and runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Suits and the ESU defense made sure they came away empty.

In game one, freshman Amanda Carlin threw the first 5.0 innings and allowed just a pair of unearned runs on four hits. She struck out seven and walked two. Suits came on to get all three outs in the sixth.

Yasmin Lee threw a complete game for Winston-Salem, giving up four hits, four walks and striking out two.

The Warriors left six runners on base, including a second-and-third, one-out situation in the top of the sixth as they were trailing 1-0.

Winston-Salem scored single runs in the first and sixth innings, taking advantage of passed balls to score in each frame.

Smith was 3-for-3 with two doubles and sophomore OF Kasey Meckes also added a double for the Warriors.

ESU will finish its spring break trip with a pair of doubleheaders, at Chowan on Thursday and Saint Augustine's on Friday.
