EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University recovered from a one-goal deficit twice in the last 15 minutes, but Victoria Gregson scored the game-winning goal for St. Thomas Aquinas with six seconds left for a 9-8 win in non-conference women's lacrosse on Saturday at Whitenight Field.

Senior attack Sarah Ginn scored three goals, freshman attack Lauren Nunes added two and sophomore midfielder Nicole Miller tied the game at 8-8 with 1:08 left.

The Warriors (0-3) won the ensuing draw control but lost possession with 19 seconds left, leaving just enough time for Johannah Mitchell to find Gregson for the game-winning goal and Mitchell's sixth assist of the day.

St. Thomas Aquinas (8-0) led 5-3 at halftime on Genevieve Stickney's goal with three seconds left, but ESU scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 6-5 lead.

Nunes scored her second of the game just over three minutes into the period, junior attack Sarah Studdiford scored two minutes later and Ginn gave ESU the lead with 20:55 remaining.

St. Thomas Aquinas scored the next two goals, by Samantha Lowney and Stickney (her third of the game), to go ahead 7-6 with 15:03 left.

Junior attack Emily Powell tied it with a free position goal for the Warriors with 5:36 remaining, but Sabrina Prestano came back to put STA back in front, 8-7, at the 3-minute mark.

In the first half, ESU scored two goals (Ginn and Nunes) in a 26-second span and led 2-1 for more than 10 minutes, before STA scored four goals in the final seven minutes to lead 5-3.

Senior Amanda Simms made seven saves for ESU and Kaitlyn Lonergan had eight saves for St. Thomas Aquinas.

ESU had advantages of 21-20 in shots and 10-9 in draw controls. St. Thomas Aquinas committed one more turnover (14-13) and both teams had 17 ground balls.

The Warriors are on the road for their next three games. They head to Kutztown for their PSAC opener on Tuesday, have a non-conference game at Chestnut Hill on Thursday, and trek to Gannon for another conference game on Saturday.
