BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - Sophomore infielder
Jamie Smith hit a bases-clearing, two-out double in the sixth inning to lift East Stroudsburg University to a 5-3 win in the second game of a non-conference softball doubleheader at Bloomfield College on Wednesday afternoon.
Bloomfield won the opener, 3-2, scoring three runs in the fifth and holding off the Warriors (10-7), who scored two in the sixth and had the tying run on third base with one out in the seventh.
Smith's double in the second game put ESU ahead, 4-2, going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior
Laura Suits, who entered in the third inning, got a lineout to center field to leave the bases loaded after Bloomfield pulled within 4-3.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the seventh as junior catcher
Rebecca Smith hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by senior OF
Jennifer Denaro. Suits pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Sophomore OF
Kasey Meckes, who was 5-for-7 on the day, hit an RBI single for ESU's first run in the third which tied the game at 1-1. Bloomfield went ahead 2-1 in the bottom half, and held the lead until the sixth. Sophomore SS
Cara Woods, Denaro and freshman 3B Laura Cregan all singled to load the bases with nobody out, and after the next two batters were retired,
Jamie Smith came through to give ESU its first lead of the day.
ESU had 12 hits in the second game with five players contributing two hits each -

Suits pitched the final 5.0 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Freshman
Allison Mende got the start and allowed one run on four hits in 2.0 innings.
In the opener, freshman
Amanda Carlin threw her fifth complete game of the season, but Bloomfield scored three runs (two earned) on two hits and two errors in the fifth.
ESU got two runs back in the sixth as Woods and Meckes started the inning with back-to-back singles. Meckes scored on a passed ball and freshman 3B
Kellie Mignoli scored on an RBI fielders choice by freshman OF
Sierra Wagner, but Bloomfield got out of the inning with no further damage.
In the bottom of the sixth, Carlin pitched around a leadoff double to get the Warriors to the plate with a 3-2 deficit in the seventh.
Rebecca Smith singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore 1B
Cara McNeil and got to third after one-out walks to Woods and Meckes, but Bloomfield was able to get out of it with a pop up and a fly out.
Meckes was 3-for-3 and Wagner went 2-for-3 to lead the offense for the Warriors. Wagner is hitting .404 (23-for-57) with 13 runs scored through 17 games.
Rebecca Smith, last week's PSAC East Player of the Week, is hitting .365 (19-for-52) with 11 extra-base hits and a team-high 15 RBI.
ESU opens its 16-game PSAC East schedule this weekend, traveling to Millersville on Friday and hosting West Chester on Saturday at 1 p.m.
