MILLERSVILLE – East Stroudsburg University scored three runs in the top of the sixth and freshman
Allison Mende and junior
Laura Suits combined on a six-hitter as the Warriors posted a 4-0 win in the second game of a PSAC East softball doubleheader on Friday at Millersville.
Millersville won the opener, 9-1 (6 inn.), behind a one-hitter from Sarah Bertoni. Junior catcher
Rebecca Smith had the Warriors' only hit, belting her fifth home run of the season in the first inning, and was 3-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack in the nightcap.
Mende relieved freshman
Amanda Carlin in the opener for ESU (11-8, 1-1), allowing just one run in 3.0 innings before Millersville ended it after six innings, and was sharp in 5.0 innings in the second game. She held the Marauders (17-7, 1-1) scoreless on five hits before Suits (2.0 IP) came on in the sixth for her second save of the season.
Neither team dented the scoreboard until the sixth, when sophomore SS
Cara Woods hit a one-out single, sophomore OF
Kasey Meckes reached on an error and freshman 3B Laura Cregan singled to load the bases with one out. Freshman
Kellie Mignoli pinch-hit and lifted a sacrifice fly to right which scored Woods, and freshman OF
Haley Thomas followed with a pinch-hit, two-run double to make it 3-0.
Suits entered after Danielle DiFilippo hit a leadoff double for Millersville in the sixth but was stranded there. The Warriors added an insurance run in the seventh on a leadoff single by Smith, a sacrifice bunt by sophomore 1B
Cara McNeil and an RBI single by senior OF
Jennifer Denaro.
Suits pitched around another leadoff double in the seventh to retire the final three batters.
Sophomore 2B
Jamie Smith and Woods both had two hits to join
Rebecca Smith, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week, with multi-hit games. Smith is hitting .577 (15-for-26) with eight RBI and eight runs to carry the Warriors to a 5-3 record in their last eight games. The rest of the team is hitting .233 in that stretch.
ESU has a quick turnaround for a Saturday doubleheader against West Chester at 1 p.m. in its home opener at Zimbar Field.
