Watch: McKeown discusses All-America status
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Redshirt junior
Brendan McKeown (174) placed sixth at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships on Saturday, giving East Stroudsburg University its fourth All-American in the last four years.
McKeown was 3-3 on the weekend to finish the season with a 23-4 record, which included a 17-match winning streak from January 9 through Friday. He entered the NCAA Championships ranked No. 4 in his weight class and was the Super Region 1 champion and Outstanding Wrestler.
McKeown opened his day on Saturday with a 7-3 decision over Ray Hall (Colorado -Pueblo) in the consolation quarterfinals before falling to a pair of top-five wrestlers in the consolation semis and fifth/sixth place match.
He lost a 4-0 decision to No. 5 Mike Williams (UNC-Pembroke) in the consolation semifinals, a rematch of his 3-2 decision over Williams in the Super Region 1 final. Williams is a three-time All-American and was the returning national champion at 165 pounds.
McKeown dropped an 11-1 major decision to No. 2 Patrick Martinez (Nebraska-Kearney), a three-time national qualifier (twice in Division I), in his final match.
McKeown finishes his season as an All-American and two-time national qualifier. He was ESU's third regional champion in four years in Division II.
On Friday, McKeown opened with a 12-6 decision over Jacob Cramer (Tiffin), lost a 10-5 decision to finalist No. 8 Blake Sorensen (Upper Iowa) in the quarterfinals, and earned his All-America status with a 10-5 decision over Zach Benzio (Seton Hill).
Redshirt junior
Braden Turner (157), also a two-time national qualifier, dropped both of his matches on Friday. He was an All-American and sixth-place finisher at 157 pounds last year.
Freshman
Tyson Searer (197) also made his NCAA debut in his first season of competition, going 0-2 with losses to two nationally-ranked wrestlers on Friday.
ESU has four All-Americans in four years in Division II in Shane Mallory (184, 2nd - 2010),
Ed Ebewo (197, 3rd - 2012), Turner (157, 6th - 2012) and McKeown (174, 6th - 2013).
The Warriors have produced 11 national qualifiers over the last four years.
Notes:
* McKeown finished 23-4 (.852) - ESU's first wrestler with 20+ wins and .800+ winning percentage in 4 years in DII . . and the first overall since Jeremy Sluyter (29-5, .853) in 1999.
* He entered the DII Championships with a 20-1 record. All three of his losses came to All-Americans in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th-place finishers.
* Searer's first-round opponent, Romero Cotton (Nebraska-Kearney), was the runner-up at 197 pounds.
