Watch: Coach Merli, O'Connor discuss All-America performance
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - East Stroudsburg University sophomore
Christina O'Connor earned All-America mention in the high jump in her first career trip to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, held Saturday in Birmingham.
O'Connor cleared 5-8 on her third and final jump to place sixth in the field and earn her All-America certificate. She was clean on her attempts through 5-7.
O'Connor won the PSAC championship at 5-7 3/4 two weeks ago at Edinboro. She was tied for fifth on the national list at 5-8 1/2 going into the competition, which she cleared at ESU's DeSchriver Invitational on February 2.
The PSAC had one other All-American in Slippery Rock freshman Ashley West, who tied for eighth at 5-7. Brittany Whitmer (Lock Haven) was 11th and Erin Flick (Shippensburg) tied for 13th.
O'Connor is ESU's fifth All-American in the women's high jump, joining a group that includes her coach Karen (Way) Gaita '91, who was a four-time All-American and the 1991 NCAA outdoor champion. Lynn Mayer was a six-time All-American (2008-11), Leslie Martin was All-America in 2007 and Shavanna Ross in 2001.
Barbara Szabo (Western State), who had the best collegiate mark in the nation at 6-3 1/2, won her third NCAA indoor title at 6-0 3/4, outlasting Jennifer Foster (Ashland) who was over 5-11 1/2.
