EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior Laura Suits and freshman Amanda Carlin had strong outings in the circle, leading East Stroudsburg University to a Senior Day sweep of Clarion (4-3, 5-2) in non-conference softball on Saturday afternoon at Zimbar Field.

Senior Jessica Ras, who returned last year from a battle with Leukemia and a double-hip replacement, made her second career start for ESU in the circle in the opener. Senior outfielder Jennifer Denaro was 2-for-2, walked twice and was twice hit by pitches for a 1.000 on-base percentage in six plate appearances and scored three runs.

Ras pitched the first inning and was relieved by Suits after throwing the first pitch of the second inning. She also had a pinch-hit at bat in the second game.

Suits finished the opener, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking one.

Carlin went the distance in the nightcap for her sixth complete game of the year. She also allowed two runs (one earned), coming on four hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Warriors (15-14) resume PSAC East play on Sunday, opening the second half of conference action with a home doubleheader against Millersville at 1 p.m.

Game 1

Clarion scored on a two-out single by Amanda Gough in the first inning, but the Warriors got that run back and took a 2-1 lead in the third. Denaro was hit by a pitch to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman 3B Kellie Mignoli, to third on a flyout to right and scored on a wild pitch. Freshman OF Sierra Wagner singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by sophomore 2B Jamie Smith, all with two outs, to put ESU in front.

The Warriors got two more in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Sophomore 1B Cara McNeil hit a leadoff single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore OF Kasey Meckes. Junior Amanda McKay singled and Denaro walked to load the bases, followed by an RBI single by Mignoli. McKay scored later in the inning on a throwing error by the Clarion shortstop.

Clarion made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by Gough, but Suits stranded the tying run on third base with a strikeout and a groundout.

Suits pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, and allowed just a one-out single in the seventh to even her record at 6-6 on the season.

McKay was 2-for-3 and Denaro had a single, walk and hit by pitch to lead the ESU offense.

Game 2

Clarion once again took a 1-0 lead in the first, and once again, ESU responded with two runs in the third as McNeil hit a two-RBI triple to right field after Jamie Smith and junior catcher Rebecca Smith both singled with one out.

In the fourth, Denaro was hit by a pitch, moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Mignoli and scored on a single by Thomas to give ESU a 3-1 advantage.

Clarion got one run (unearned) in the sixth to make it 3-2, but the Warriors came back with two unearned runs in the bottom half.

Carlin stranded five Clarion runners on base in the game and is now 6-8 in 16 games (14 starts), including six complete games.
