LOCK HAVEN - Junior
Laura Suits threw a one-hitter for her second career shutout as East Stroudsburg blanked Lock Haven, 2-0, in the first game of Friday's softball doubleheader in central Pennsylvania.
Lock Haven led game two, 4-0, with two on and two out in ESU's half of the fifth inning, when the game was called due to thunder and lightning after two rain delays. The game did not meet the qualifications for an official contest, and team and individual statistics do not count.
Suits carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning which was broken up on a one-out single by Alicia Caccioti. The Haven (24-8), which leads the PSAC Central with a 7-1 record, had the runners on first and second with one out after a hit batter to open the inning, but Suits got a flyout to center and groundout to short to end the threat.
Suits fired a 1-2-3 seventh inning to complete her second career shutout, and ESU's second one-hitter in the last five seasons. She struck out five, walked two and hit two batters while stranding all six LHU runners on base.
Offensively, the Warriors (18-14) broke through for two runs in the top of the fifth to hand Lock Haven's Brianna Jennings (18-2) just her second loss of the season.
ESU managed five hits in the game and cashed in on its only extra-base hit, a one-out double by freshman SS
Haley Thomas in the fifth. Freshman OF
Sierra Wagner walked, both runners moved up on a groundout by sophomore 2B
Jamie Smith, and Thomas scampered home on a wild pitch for the game's first run. Junior C
Rebecca Smith followed with an infield single to drive in Wagner for a 2-0 lead.
Wagner was 1-for-2 with two walks and sophomore 1B
Cara McNeil and freshman 3B
Kellie Mignoli also had hits for the Warriors.
In game two, Lock Haven scored all four of its runs in the first. The first rain delay came with one out in the top of the fourth, and the second came after ESU put two runners on with two outs in the fifth.
ESU heads to Gannon (19-8) for a 12 p.m. doubleheader with the Golden Knights. (
UPDATE: Saturday's DH at Gannon canceled due to inclement weather forecast)
The Warriors, 4-6 in the PSAC East, will play their final six divisional games next weekend. ESU enters this weekend tied for the division's third and final playoff spot.
