Warriors Softball Posts Fourth Straight Split on the Road at Philadelphia University

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore OF Kasey Meckes and freshman 3B Kellie Mignoli both had four RBI in a 9-3 win in the opener as East Stroudsburg University split a non-conference softball doubleheader at Philadelphia University on Wednesday afternoon.

Meckes had an RBI double in the second inning and a three-run homer, the first of her career, in the third inning to break the game open. Mignoli had a two-run double in the second and added an RBI single in the third inning.

Philadelphia (11-19) scored four runs (three unearned) in the fifth inning of the nightcap to post a 4-2 victory and end a 10-game losing streak. ESU (13-10) split its fourth straight doubleheader, winning game two in each of the first three.

Sophomore 1B Cara McNeil had five of ESU's 15 hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs in game one and 2-for-4 in game two.

Junior catcher Rebecca Smith hit her sixth home run of the season and the 10th of her career in the opener. She had an 11-game hitting streak and 14-game reaching base streak end in game two, going 0-for-4 to drop her average to .366. She hit .514 (18-for-35) in the streak, which began March 19.

Meckes is hitting a team-high .396 (21-for-53) after going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.

Senior Jennifer Denaro was hit by a pitch three times, bringing her season total to 11, the second-most in school history. Standout second baseman Shannon Dietrich was hit 16 times in 2007.

ESU returns to PSAC East action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Kutztown. The Warriors split their first two conference doubleheaders last weekend against Millersville and West Chester.


Game 1

Freshman Amanda Carlin started and earned the win, throwing 4.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Allison Mende threw the final 2.1 innings, allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one.

Philadelphia U scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but ESU went ahead 3-2 in the top of the second. McNeil singled, stole second and scored on a double by Meckes, Denaro was hit by a pitch, and Mignoli followed with a one-out, two-RBI double.

The Warriors added four more in the third to take a 7-2 lead, keyed by Meckes' first career home run, a three-run shot. Mignoli added an RBI single later in the inning.

In the fifth, ESU scratched out another run as sophomore SS Cara Woods was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Mignoli.

Rebecca Smith became the 10th ESU player with 10 career home runs with a solo shot in the sixth.

McNeil (3-for-4, 2 runs), Meckes (2-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 runs) and Mignoli (2-for-3, 4 RBI) accounted for seven of the Warriors' 10 hits.

Game 2

ESU took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third, which held up until Philadelphia U scored four runs (three unearned) on four this and three ESU errors in the fifth to take control.

The Warriors got one run back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Rebecca Smith which scored sophomore OF Kacie Killeen.

Freshman Kasia Smith threw a complete game for the Rams, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. She struck out six and walked two.

Mende held Philadelphia U scoreless for the first 3.0 innings, allowing two hits, striking out two and walking one. Junior Laura Suits came on after a leadoff double in the fourth but was credited with the loss, allowing the four runs (one earned) in the fifth. She allowed five hits, struck out one and walked one in 3.0 innings.

McNeil (2-for-4), Jamie Smith, Meckes and Mignoli had the Warriors' five hits.
