Kutztown Posts Sweep Against ESU Softball

KUTZTOWN – Dominique Ficara threw a pair of complete games to lead Kutztown to a doubleheader sweep of East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East softball on Saturday.

Kutztown won the opener, 5-2, before Ficara threw a two-hitter in a 7-0 win in the second game. She carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of a 3-0 shutout against Millersville on Friday.

ESU (13-12, 2-4) stayed in both games, trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth in the opener before Kutztown put three runs on the board. In game two, it was 3-0 before the Golden Bears (14-16, 4-4) scored four runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Senior Laura Suits threw her sixth complete game of the season in the first game, going all 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Freshmen Amanda Carlin (5.2 IP) and Allison Mende (0.2) handled the pitching in game two.

ESU managed seven hits on the day, including base hits in both games by sophomore 2B Jamie Smith and junior catcher Rebecca Smith.

The Warriors scored both of their runs in the seventh inning of the opener on RBI doubles by freshman 3B Kellie Mignoli and freshman OF Haley Thomas.

Colleen Smith hit a two-run homer in the first and a three-run shot in the fifth to provide Kutztown's offense in game one. She had an RBI single in the first inning of the second game.

ESU finishes the first half of its 16-game PSAC East schedule against Shippensburg at Zimbar Field on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
