Coach Berkowitz talks about the win
EAST STROUDSBURG - Sophomore forward
Madeline DeVico scored both goals and No. 15-ranked East Stroudsburg University remained unbeaten and unscored upon, posting a 2-0 win over No. 23 Gannon in PSAC women's soccer on Friday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
DeVico scored with 2:27 left in the first half and added her second goal with 7:01 remaining in regulation for the Warriors (3-0, 3-0), who are unscored upon through three games for just the second time in school history and first time since 1995.
ESU also has three straight shutouts of PSAC opponents for just the second time, after opening the season with a 1-0 win over Kutztown on Sept. 5 and a 1-0 win at Mansfield on Sept. 7.
Gannon (2-1, 2-1) had most of the good scoring chances early, but senior goalkeeper
Brittain Wagner turned away Michelle Genetin 15 minutes in for the first of her four saves. Mani Brueckner, the 2012 PSAC Player of the Year, hit the post on a corner kick and was just high on a 25-yard shot before the Warriors broke through.
DeVico scored her second career goal and first of the season with a header in the 43rd minute, and had her second of the game in the 83rd minute after a scramble at the top of the 18-yard box.
ESU held a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Both teams had five shots and two corners in the first half.
Gannon goalkeeper Sarah Geffel had two saves for the Golden Knights.
ESU improves to 3-1-1 against Gannon, which joined the PSAC in 2008. The Warriors won last year's regular season meeting, 3-2, at Eiler-Martin Stadium, and advanced on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie in the PSAC quarterfinals at Gannon last fall.
The Warriors are back at home on Saturday, hosting Mercyhurst (2-1-1) at 12 p.m. The Lakers are coming off a 4-2 upset at defending regional champ West Chester on Friday.
