BRONX, N.Y. - Senior
Kim Wernerspach and junior
Chris Schneider won the women's and men's races, respectively, as both East Stroudsburg University teams won the Division II/III/NJCAA classification of the Fordham Invitational, held Saturday in the Bronx.
Wernerspach ran a time of 19:05.81 for a 31-second margin of victory on the 5K course. She led the Warriors in competition for the first time in her career, posted her first career win and fifth top-10 finish as ESU's top returner from last season.
ESU's women's team victory was its first since besting a 16-team field at Salisbury (Md.) in 2011, posting a 32-46 margin over Southern Maine.
Wernerspach was the first runner to lead ESU in a major competition, other than national qualifiers
Rose Mascoli and
Corinne Fitzgerald, since Jonna Trexler at the Nevins Invite in 2009.
Sophomore
Chelsea Conover ran second on the team and fifth overall in 20:04.85, followed by senior
Chelsea Morales (6th, 20:11.58), senior
Kim Lowry (7th, 20:18.16) and junior
Chelsea Wootten (13th, 20:46.65).
On the men's 5 mile course, Schneider edged classmate
Steve Ruch for the individual title by 11 seconds, 26:26.42 to 26:37.21. Sophomore
Dan Davis was fifth in 27:31.05, followed by junior
Chris Ott (12th, 28:07.41) and sophomore
Alex Zubko (13th, 28:12.85).
ESU won by a 33-78 margin over Philadelphia University.
Schneider, ESU's #2 runner on last year's team that advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1989, had his first career win and sixth career top-10. He led the Warriors for the third time in his career, also pacing the team at Hamilton last year and the NCAA Regional as a freshman in 2011.
The Warriors will compete at the Kutztown Division II Challenge next weekend.
