EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior forward
Kerri McClay scored midway through the first half as East Stroudsburg University opened the 2013 women's soccer season with its second straight shutout, a 1-0 victory at Mansfield on Saturday afternoon.
McClay scored her 11th career goal in the 22nd minute, assisted by junior back
Lexie Peveraro, and the Warriors outshot the Mounties 20-9 while holding them to just one shot on goal.
ESU opened the season on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Kutztown on a second-half goal by freshman midfielder
Shea Neal, with senior goalkeeper
Brittain Wagner making eight saves.
The Warriors posted consecutive shutouts to open a season for the fourth time in program history, also doing it in 1995, 1999 and 2008 – their second season under seventh-year head coach
Rob Berkowitz.
ESU is one of three PSAC programs to open 2-0 in conference action so far, along with IUP and Clarion. Gannon (1-0) is at Lock Haven tonight, while defending champion Slippery Rock (1-0) and Millersville (1-0) won't face another conference opponent until Tuesday.
McClay, ESU's leading active scorer, now has a goal in all four of her collegiate seasons. She had three goals as a freshman, a team-high five goals as a sophomore and two last year as part of the Warriors' PSAC semifinal team.
ESU is 10-3-3 against conference opponents since the start of the 2012 season.
The Warriors are idle until next weekend, hosting Gannon at noon on Friday and Mercyhurst at noon on Saturday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
