No. 10 Stonehill Rallies for 6-5 Win over No. 9 ESU Field Hockey

EAST STROUDSBURG – No. 10-ranked Stonehill scored five goals in a span of 13:54 midway through the second half, as the Skyhawks overcame a 3-1 halftime deficit for a 6-5 win over No. 9 East Stroudsburg University in non-conference field hockey on Sunday at Whitenight Field.

Erika Kelly scored four goals for Stonehill (2-0) after netting all three in a 3-2 (OT) win at No. 3 Bloomsburg on Saturday, and Emily Sideris scored the game-winner with 12:20 left to cap their run.

ESU (1-1) held a two-goal lead at four different junctures – 2-0, 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3 – before Stonehill's rally.

Junior forward Gabrielle Seibert, who scored two goals in ESU's 3-2 win over No. 5 Merrimack on Saturday, opened the scoring 1:14 in.

Sophomore forward Ally Roth scored off a penalty corner, assisted by senior midfielder Brielle Kessel, just over four minutes later, and scored again later in the half after Kelly got Stonehill on the board.

After ESU led 3-1 at halftime, Jennifer Foley found the cage 8:46 into the second half to kick off a five-goal period for Stonehill.

ESU bounced back on the first career goal by senior midfielder Kaitlin Blum, but Kelly scored her second goal just 17 seconds later to make it 4-3.

The Warriors responded quickly again – this time 22 seconds later – as junior forward Jessica Lawville pushed ESU's margin back to 5-3.

The goal-scoring pace slowed for just a few minutes, before Stonehill scored three more times in a stretch of 5:39 to pull within one, tie the game and then take the lead.

Kelly made it 5-4 with 17:59 remaining, then tied it with 15:25 to go before Sideris had what proved to be the game-winning goal.

ESU advantages of 20-19 in shots and 13-6 in penalty corners, but Stonehill goalkeeper Elizabeth Genovese came up with 12 saves, including a penalty stroke early in the first half.

Freshman goalkeeper Madelyn Craver had five saves for ESU. Freshman Danielle Ard entered late in the game and played the final 8:01.

ESU hosts Bloomsburg in its next action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Whitenight Field. The game against the Huskies, a PSAC foe, will count as a non-conference game in the PSAC's new one-division format. The two schools will meet in PSAC play on October 9 at Bloomsburg.
