ESU Women’s Basketball Falls at Bloomsburg, 63-51

EAST STROUDSBURG - Jocelyn Ford had 23 points and nine assists to lead Bloomsburg to a 63-51 win over East Stroudsburg University in PSAC East women's basketball on Wednesday night at Nelson Field House.

Junior forward Jessica Martin had 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks to lead ESU (8-8, 3-3), which led 28-26 at halftime and by six early in the second half before Bloomsburg (12-3, 3-2) came back.

Ford scored 20 of her 23 points in the second half after handing out eight of her nine assists in the first half for Bloomsburg. Lauren Nealon added nine points on three three-pointers and Catherine Noack and Marla Simmons had eight points each.

Freshman forward Allison Howard, who received her third PSAC East Freshman of the Week of the season on Monday, had nine points and five rebounds for ESU. Junior guard Ryann Fiascki and sophomore guard Helena Gemmell both scored seven points.

The Warriors led for most of the first half, using a 15-2 surge to take a 21-14 lead with just under nine minutes left in the period. Bloomsburg pulled even at 24-all, but the Warriors led 28-26 at halftime.

ESU held Bloomsburg without a field goal for the first seven minutes of the second half, and buckets by freshman guard Audrey Stapleton, Martin and Howard put the Warriors in front 34-28 at the 14-minute mark.

Bloomsburg came back with a 15-5 stretch, with 11 points from Ford, to take the lead for good. ESU cut it to 45-43 on a layup by sophomore center Michelle Boggs with 7:30 left and 51-49 as Howard scored at the five-minute juncture, but Bloomsburg closed with a 12-2 run down the stretch.

ESU shot 44.7 percent (17-for-38) but had 24 turnovers, while Bloomsburg shot 39.6 percent (21-for-53) with 11 turnovers. The Warriors had a 32-24 edge on the boards.

ESU is away from action this weekend and returns to the floor next Wednesday at Koehler Fieldhouse, hosting Cheyney. The Wolves (1-13, 1-4) were idle tonight and host Millersville Saturday.
