EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University cut a 12-point second-half deficit to a single point in the final 15 seconds, but Millersville held on for a 52-49 win in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Sophomore forward Madison Tamburini scored a career-high 14 points for ESU (1-1, 1-1), which was coming off an 87-74 win at Lock Haven in its season opener on Wednesday.

Millersville (3-1, 1-1) led 32-20 with 16:08 remaining, but the Warriors chipped into the lead with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Tamburni, to get back in the contest.

ESU cut a 40-30 margin to three points on a couple of occasions at the midpoint of the second half, and held Millersville without a field goal for the final 7:53.

Back-to-back buckets by senior forward Jessica Martin made it 49-47 with 3:10 remaining, and Martin hit two free throws to close the margin to one point (50-49) with 14 seconds left.

Millersville's Carly Gallagher (13 points) made two free throws to extend the lead to 52-49 with 12 seconds left, and ESU was unable to get a good look at the game-tying three-pointer.

Millersville led 6-2 at the midpoint of the first half after a slow start by both teams, as ESU's first field didn't come until the 9:36 mark of the period. The Warriors stayed in the game with their defensive pressure and trailed just 25-14 at halftime despite a 4-for-20 shooting performance.

ESU shot 38.2 percent (13-for-34) in the second half, holding Millersville to 5-for-15, but the Marauders were 15-for-22 at the foul line.

Tamburini hit three three-pointers and was 5-for-7 at the foul line for ESU, exceeding her previous career-high of six points as a freshman. Sophomore forward Allison Howard had nine points and five rebounds and Martin and senior guard Ryann Fiascki both had eight points. Fiascki had a career-high 24 and Martin had 17 points in the win at Lock Haven.

Gallagher's 13 points led Millersville, with Alexis Martin (10 points) also reaching double figures.

ESU had a 25-14 advantage in turnovers, while Millersville held a 43-33 edge in rebounding.

ESU and Millersville played yet another low-scoring game, with ESU winning 49-48 at Millersville in the first round of the PSAC Tournament last winter following the Marauders' 42-31 first-round win the previous year.

ESU returns to action with the 50th Annual Pocono Classic on November 29-30 at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors play Dominican (N.Y.) on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Concordia (N.Y.) on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the second game both days.
