Fiascki Scores 28, But ESU Women’s Basketball Falls to Dominican, 73-68

EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior guard Ryann Fiascki scored 17 of her career-high 28 points in the second half, but Dominican held off East Stroudsburg University for a 73-68 win in non-conference women's basketball on the first day of the 50th Annual Pocono Classic on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.
 
Lashone Hathorne had 26 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead Dominican (3-4), which jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first half and withstood a comeback by the Warriors (1-2).

In the day's first game, Shippensburg (3-2) posted an 87-47 win over Concordia (0-5) behind 17 points and 11 rebounds from Morgan Griffith, 14 points from Stephanie Knauer and 13 from Vicky Tumasz.
 
Fiascki, who has hit her career-high in two of the first three games this season, made two three-pointers in the final 2:30 to twice get ESU within a single point. She surpassed her career-best of 24 points in an 87-74 win at Lock Haven in the season opener.

Fiascki hit a three with 2:06 left, closing the Dominican lead to 64-63, then answered a triple by Hathorne with another to make it 67-66 with 1:05 left.

Hathorne scored with 43 seconds left to put Dominican ahead 69-66, and after an ESU turnover, Jacqueline Rywalt made two free throws with 29 seconds left to make it a five-point game.

Shannon McGill scored 14 points, 12 in the second half, and Lisa Bouffard had 14 points for Dominican. McGill made two late three's down the stretch.

Senior forward Jessica Martin had nine points and seven rebounds, sophomore forward Allison Howard had eight points and redshirt senior guard Andrea Veres added seven points for the Warriors. Junior guard Helena Gemmell had six points and three steals and junior center Michelle Boggs had five points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Dominican opened leads of 13-2 and 22-9 before ESU cut the margin to four points (30-26) at halftime.

The Warriors tied the score four times in the second half before taking their first lead, 44-42, with just over 12 minutes remaining.

ESU led by as many as five points - the second time at 51-46 - but Dominican scored the next six points, including four straight by Hathorne.

ESU's last lead was 60-59 after two foul shots with 3:09 left, before McGill gave Dominican the lead for good with a three-pointer with less than three minutes remaining.

Dominican shot 45.2 percent overall and 7-for-14 at the three-point line, while ESU shot 38.7 percent from the field and 5-for-19 from long distance. ESU held a five-point advantage (15-10) at the foul line.

ESU hosts Concordia on the second day of the Pocono Classic on Sunday at 3 p.m. Shippensburg faces Dominican at 1 p.m.
