ESU Women’s Basketball Tops Concordia, 86-44, to Complete 50th Annual Pocono Classic

EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore forward Allison Howard scored 16 points and junior guard Helena Gemmell had a career-high 15 as East Stroudsburg University posted an 86-44 win over Concordia on the second day of the 50th Annual Pocono Classic on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Shippensburg (4-2) won 106-68 over Dominican (3-5) in the day's first game and set tournament records for points in a game (106) and in a tournament (193) in the 26th playing of the women's tournament. The classic was first played in 1964-65, with the women's division added in 1987-88.

Shippensburg forward Morgan Griffith (33 points, 19 rebounds in 2 games) was named Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Stephanie Knauer and Vicky Tumasz, Lashonda Hathorne (Dominican), Ryann Fiascki (ESU) and Hadiyah Black (Concordia).

On Saturday, Shippensburg won 87-47 against Concordia and Dominican outlasted ESU, 73-68.

Fiascki scored a career-high 28 points against Dominican to earn her All-Tournament spot. She had seven points and eight assists against Concordia on Sunday.

ESU jumped out to a 22-0 lead before Concordia got on the board with 11:11 left in the first half. The Warriors led 43-18 at halftime.

ESU's 42-point margin of victory is its largest since a 103-30 win over PSU-Hazleton in February 2007.

Howard's 16 points against Concordia were a season-high and Gemmell's 15 surpassed her career-high of 12 at Millersville last December.

Senior forward Jessica Martin, the Pocono Classic MVP her first three seasons, added 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks.

Three Warriors scored seven points each – Fiascki, redshirt senior guard Andrea Veres and sophomore guard Courtney Brown.

Julianne Wilkinson scored 15 points and Hadiyah Black had 14 points and seven rebounds for Concordia (0-6).

ESU held a 32-18 advantage in turnovers and a 45-39 edge on the glass.

The Warriors return to PSAC East action on Wednesday with a trip to Shippensburg. ESU is 1-1 in divisional play, with an 87-74 win at Lock Haven on November 19 and a 52-49 loss to Millersville on November 22.
