Shippensburg Edges ESU Women’s Basketball, 61-53

SHIPPENSBURG - Senior guard Ryann Fiascki led East Stroudsburg University with 16 points, but Shippensburg prevailed 61-53 in PSAC East women's basketball on Wednesday night at Heiges Field House.
 
Logan Snyder scored 14 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Shippensburg (5-2, 1-1), which outscored the Warriors (2-3, 1-2) by 21 points at the foul line, going 27-for-33 in the game and 19-for-22 in the second half.

Fiascki stayed hot from the field, shooting 7-for-13 after averaging 16.8 points per game on 60 percent shooting through the first four games. Sophomore forward Allison Howard added 11 points for ESU.
 
Ship led 29-28 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, but ESU closed within 43-41 with 5:27 left on a jumper by Howard before the Lady Raiders pulled away.

Sophomore guard Melissa Poderis scored seven points, including five in the last minute of the first half, before Snyder scored to give Ship its halftime lead. ESU's biggest first-half lead was five points (19-14) with 8:45 left in the period before Ship scored the next seven to go ahead.

The Warriors battled back from a 43-36 deficit, holding Ship without a point for more than three minutes, to close the margin to a single possession. Then Snyder hit two jumpers to book-end a 6-0 run by Ship and the Lady Raiders were 10-for-12 at the foul line in the final 3:04.

Lauren Gold (12 points, 6 rebounds), Morgan Griffith (10 points, 7 rebounds) and Stephanie Knauer (10 points, 6 rebounds) joined Snyder in double figures for Ship. Griffith was the MVP of ESU's Pocono Classic last weekend.

Senior forward Jessica Martin had five points and four blocked shots for ESU. The Warriors held Shippensburg to 34.8 percent (16-for-46) from the field and had a plus-six advantage in turnovers (22-16) but couldn't overcome a big deficit at the foul line.

ESU shot 34.4 percent (21-for-61) from the field, 5-for-21 from three-point distance and 6-for-9 at the foul line. Shippensburg had a 43-30 advantage on the glass.

ESU hosts No. 17-ranked Bloomsburg (4-1, 2-0) on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Huskies were idle on Wednesday night.
