ESU Women’s Basketball Improves to 11-9 (6-4) with 80-56 Win vs. Kutztown

EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore guard Melissa Poderis and sophomore center Michelle Boggs both scored a career-high 14 points and East Stroudsburg University hit the 80-point mark for the first time in seven years with an 80-56 win over Kutztown in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Halie Cintron tied her career-high with 11 points and junior guard Ryann Fiascki also scored 11 points for ESU (11-9, 6-4), which won for the fifth time in seven games.

Boggs scored 11 points in a 14-3 first-half run for the Warriors, who led 36-22 at intermission. Kutztown never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way, and ESU's biggest lead was 26 with less than three minutes left.

Boggs was 6-for-6 from the field and Poderis had a career-high six steals for ESU.

Freshman forward Allison Howard scored eight points in 17 minutes after pouring in a career-high 25 in a 67-49 win at Mansfield on Wednesday night.

Junior forward Jessica Martin, ESU's top scorer and rebounder, had five points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes. Martin had three blocked shots, all in the first half, to move within three blocks of the PSAC's career top 10. She entered the weekend tied for fifth in DII with 3.0 blocks per game.

The Warriors took the lead for good early in the contest, with a three-pointer by Cintron breaking a 9-9 tie and starting a quick 7-0 run with Howard and Martin also scoring.

Boggs had the first of her two first-half blocks, then went on her own scoring surge. She had four baskets in the post, added putback and a free throw to complete a three-point play as the Warriors went ahead 30-15 with 4:58 left in the first half.

The big second-half push was a 10-0 run in 2:30, which included a three-pointer by Poderis, as ESU stretched its lead to 55-32 with less than 12 minutes left.

Freshman guard Audrey Stapleton added seven points off the bench and ESU got 31 points from its reserves, led by Boggs' 14 points and six rebounds.

ESU, which led the PSAC in field goal percentage defense (37.5) entering the weekend, held Kutztown to 38.0 percent (19-for-50) and forced 25 turnovers. The Warriors improved to 9-3 when forcing at least 20 turnovers this season.

Martin and Boggs combined for ESU's five blocks, just off its PSAC-leading rate of 5.3 per game, and the Warriors had 17 steals (Poderis 6, Fiascki 4).

The Warriors shot a season-best 50.9 percent (27-for-53) led by Boggs going 6-for-6. They were also 6-for-12 from the three-point line with Fiascki, Poderis and Cintron all going 2-for-3.

Kutztown put four players in double figures in Natalya Lee (15 points), Kelsey Watson (15), Jess Harvey (12) and Alyssa Bonenberger (10 points, 7 rebounds).

ESU avenged a 59-58 loss at Kutztown on November 23, and looks for its second win over Lock Haven this season on Wednesday in central Pennsylvania.

The Warriors topped the Lady Eagles, 75-67, on December 4 at Koehler Fieldhouse. Lock Haven (4-16, 2-8) is coming off a 69-57 loss at Bloomsburg, its fourth straight setback.


GAME NOTES
* ESU's last 80-point game came in an 83-72 win at Kutztown in the next-to-last game of the 2007-08 season.

* Martin's 197 career blocks are 12th in PSAC history. Shelly Bowie (Millersville, 1981-85) is 10th with 200, and Mercedes VanWagner (Kutztown, 2004-08) is 11th with 199.

* Boggs moved into a tie for 10th on ESU's career blocks list with 45, matching Monika Fogelsanger (2004-08).
