ESU Softball Falls to UVA-Wise (8-7 - 9 inn.) and King (3-2) at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - East Stroudsburg University dropped a pair of one-run games, 8-7 (9 inn.) to Virginia-Wise and 3-2 to King (Tenn.), on the second day of the Tusculum (Tenn.) Pioneer Classic in non-conference softball on Saturday.

The Warriors (1-3), who opened the season on Friday with a 10-0 (5 inn.) win over Mercyhurst and a 6-2 loss to King, finishes its five games in Tennessee against host Tusculum on Sunday.

Virginia-Wise - L 8-7 (9 inn.)

ESU rallied from a 4-0 deficit through three innings to force extra innings, but UVA-Wise outlasted the Warriors in the international tiebreaker.

ESU got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by junior 1B Cara McNeil (3-for-4, 5 RBI) after singles by sophomore OF Sierra Wagner and junior OF Cara Woods.

UVA-Wise got the run back in the bottom of the fifth before the Warriors tied it with a four-run sixth.

McNeil had the big blow with a three-run homer to tie the game at 5-5. Senior C Rebecca Smith singled and junior OF Kasey Meckes walked, followed by an RBI double by Woods, before McNeil's homer to left center, the fourth of her career.

ESU scored its runner in the international tiebreaker in both the eighth and ninth innings, but UVA-Wise scored twice in the ninth.

In the eighth, Meckes advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Woods, and scored on McNeil's RBI bunt single.

In the ninth, sophomore 3B Kellie Mignoli moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by junior 2B Jamie Smith.

UVA-Wise loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning, scored the tying run on a single and the winning run (Allyssa Zebrowski).

McNeil was 3-for-4 with five RBI, Woods was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner went 2-for-5. Meckes was 0-for-3 with a walk and scored three runs.

King (Tenn.) - L 3-2

ESU dropped a tight game to King for the second straight day, after the Cyclones won 6-2 on Friday night on a walk-off home run by Fallon Thomas.

ESU senior Laura Suits and King's Hannah Light, last year's Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year, both threw complete games in the circle and allowed two earned runs.

King scored two runs in the first inning and an unearned run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, before ESU scored in the fifth and sixth innings.

Thomas led off the fifth with a single and scored on a two-out double by freshman 3B Rae Holden.

The Warriors got another run in the sixth and threatened to tie it. Wagner hit a one-out single and scored on a two-out triple by Woods, and Thomas followed with a walk before Light got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Suits allowed three runs (two earned) on 11 hits, struck out four and walked three in 7.0 innings. Light surrendered six hits, struck out seven and walked two.
