WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore high jumper
Seth Bailey finished third in the nation to earn his first career NCAA Division II All-America honor, tying the school record with a mark of 6-11 3/4 at the NCAA DII Championships on Saturday in North Carolina.
Bailey led the competition through the first four heights, going clean through 6-11 3/4, before Edward Dudley (Lake Erie) and Jeron Robinson (Texas A&M-Kingsville) both topped the bar at 7-1, with Dudley winning the national title.
Bailey tied the school record of 6-11 3/4 set on February 22 by sophomore
William Berry, who was tied for ninth at 6-8 3/4.
In the women's high jump, junior
Christina O'Connor was ninth with a mark of 5-7, missing her second All-America honor by one spot. She was sixth in the nation indoors as a sophomore.
Bailey is ESU's second All-American in the men's high jump, joining Mike Newhard, an indoor All-American in 2002 and 2003. Bailey made his second NCAA appearance, qualifying outdoors as a freshman.
On Friday, junior
Travis Toth was 11th in the men's weight throw at 60-5 3/4.
ESU high jump coach Karen (Way) Gaita '91, the school's most recent national champion in 1991, was honored this week as the USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Women's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year for her work with the Warriors' high jumpers.
Bailey is the sixth individual All-American that Gaita has coached in her 17th year at ESU.
