Laura Suits and freshman
Rachael Liguori both threw complete game shutouts as East Stroudsburg University swept Millersville in a PSAC East softball doubleheader, 1-0 and 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Zimbar Field.
Suits held Millersville (22-22, 10-14) to four hits in the opener, ending the Marauders' six-game winning streak, before Liguori struck out six and allowed just five hits in the nightcap for ESU (13-20, 8-10), which finishes the regular season with 10 games in a six-day stretch next week.
The shutout sweep is ESU's first in divisional play since 2007, when the Warriors blanked Mansfield and Millersville in both ends of doubleheaders that season.
Millersville was coming off a pair of shutouts (1-0, 4-0) over PSAC East leader West Chester on Friday, but couldn't get its offense going against the Warriors on Senior Day.
ESU had 13 hits led by senior catcher
Rebecca Smith, who was 3-for-6. Four Warriors had RBI's in the doubleheader.
Game 1 – W 1-0Suits threw her fourth shutout of the season, and the sixth of her career, in the opener. Millersville put a runner in scoring position in four different innings but couldn't capitalize, while the Warriors broke through with the game's only run in the fifth inning off the Marauders' Brianna Andraos.
Freshman pinch-runner
Sam Parker came around to score after sophomore 3B
Haley Thomas led off with a single. Parker moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior OF
Kasey Meckes, third on a fielder's choice and scored on a fielder's choice with junior OF
Cara Woods getting credit for the RBI.
Millersville's Heather Lutz hit a leadoff double in the sixth and ESU committed an error to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After an infield popup, Ashley Cantiello flew out to right field and senior
Kaitlin Blum threw Lutz out at third base trying to advance.
In the seventh, Mandy Hammond had a pinch-hit single with one out but Suits got two flyouts to left field to end it.
Game 2 – W 3-0Liguori earned her first career shutout, and her second complete game win of the week after beating Mansfield 4-3 on Thursday.
She scattered five hits but no more than one in an inning, and got an early lead when ESU scored in the second.
The Warriors strung together three straight singles, with senior
Amanda McKay driving in a run after freshman SS
Rae Holden and
Rebecca Smith both had base hits with one out.
Liguori stranded a leadoff double in the fifth inning, and ESU got two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore OF
Sierra Wagner singled to score junior 2B
Jamie Smith, then
Rebecca Smith singled off the pitcher to drive in junior 1B
Cara McNeil.
Holden and
Rebecca Smith both had two hits in game two as ESU had nine hits off Millersville's Amanda Wink.
