Game 2 - L 4-2

EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior catcher Rebecca Smith scored from first base on a fielding error for a 3-2 (9 inn.) win in the opener as East Stroudsburg University split a PSAC East softball doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Monday at Zimbar Field.

Sophomore Allison Mende threw 7.0 shutout innings in relief for the Warriors (14-21, 9-11), who notched their first four-game winning streak against the PSAC East since 2007 with the victory in the opener.

Bloomsburg (19-12, 11-7) built a 4-0 lead and held on for a 4-2 win in the nightcap. ESU had just two hits in the first six innings off the Huskies' Sarah Bertoni, then rallied to put the tying run on first base before Bertoni got out of the jam.

ESU was looking for its first-ever doubleheader sweep of Bloomsburg in a series that goes back to 1980.

The split kicks off a 10-game week for the Warriors as they finish the regular season. They will make trips to Shippensburg on Tuesday, Mansfield on Wednesday and West Chester on Friday before hosting Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m.

ESU is tied for fourth in the PSAC East with Lock Haven (11-13) and Mansfield (9-11) as the final week of the regular season continues. The top four teams in the eight-team PSAC East will qualify for the postseason as ESU looks for its first PSAC Tournament trip since 2010.

Game 1 - W 3-2 (9 inn.)

Smith hit a one-out single and scored on an error on Bloomsburg centerfielder Chrissy Belko, who dropped a fly ball in the left-center gap off the bat of senior Amanda McKay for the winning run in ESU's extra-inning victory.

Bloomsburg scored in both of the first two innings before Mende relieved senior Laura Suits in the circle to start the third.

Mende held BU scoreless the rest of the way, allowing seven hits, striking out one and walking one. She was coming off a 5-1 win over Shippensburg last Friday in which she took a shutout into the seventh inning.

ESU scored in the third and sixth innings to extend the game with junior 2B Jamie Smith in the middle of both rallies. Smith hit a two-out RBI single to score junior OF Kasey Meckes in the third, and hit a two-out double and scored on an RBI single by junior OF Cara Woods to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.

Both teams had chances to score before ESU won it in the ninth. The Huskies had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but Mende got Bertoni to ground out to short. In the eighth, Hannah Moir hit a two-out single and moved to second on a walk, but pinch-hitter Hollly Peacock grounded out to short.

Bloomsburg also stranded a leadoff baserunner in the ninth when Erika Yanora hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Mende forced a groundout and a popup to get out of the inning.

In ESU's seventh, McKay hit a two-out single but didn't advance. Jamie Smith drew a two-out walk in the eighth and was 2-for-3 with an RBI, run and walk in the opener.

Bloomsburg's Taylor Parker went the distance in the circle. She threw 8.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. The Huskies had 13 hits with five players collecting two hits each.

Game 2 - L 4-2

Bloomsburg led 2-0 going into the top of the seventh, then added two runs on three hits and an ESU error to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, junior 1B Cara McNeil reached on an error, Rebecca Smith singled and McKay plated McNeil with a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning. Smith scored on a double by sophomore OF Sierra Wagner, and Thomas hit a two-out single to put runners at first and third before Bertoni retired Meckes with a flyout to right field.

Liguori threw her fourth straight complete game for the Warriors, coming off her first career shutout, a five-hitter in a 3-0 win over Millersville in a sweep on Saturday.

Bertoni allowed two runs, both unearned, on six hits for the Huskies. Thomas had two hits for ESU.
