ESU Softball Season Ends on Sunday at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG – Shippensburg secured the No. 3 in the PSAC East in next week's PSAC Tournament as East Stroudsburg University's 2014 softball season came to a close with a pair of losses to the Lady Raiders in PSAC East action on Sunday.

Shippensburg's Emily Estep completed a remarkable regular season with a 20-2 record and 0.96 ERA in the opener, which the Lady Raiders won, 5-2, after ESU scored twice to tie the game in the fifth inning. Ship (31-13, 17-11) won the nightcap, 6-3.

ESU (14-29, 9-19) was in the hunt for the PSAC East's No. 4 seed on Monday, standing 9-11 after a split with Bloomsburg, but fell to Mansfield, West Chester, Kutztown and Shippensburg in the last four days.

Sophomore 3B Haley Thomas was 3-for-6 with a walk and an RBI, senior Amanda McKay was 3-for-8 with a double and two RBI and senior catcher Rebecca Smith went 2-for-5 with walk and an RBI for the Warriors.

McKay, Smith, pitcher Laura Suits and outfielder Kaitlin Blum all played their final games for ESU.

Smith, an All-PSAC East selection last year, finishes tied for 11th at ESU with 132 career hits, tied for fifth with 79 runs scored, 12th with 61 RBI and eighth with 195 total bases. Suits ranks sixth with 219 strikeouts and tied for seventh with 90 appearances in the circle.

Junior 1B Cara McNeil led the Warriors with a .328 batting average, .369 on-base percentage, .466 slugging percentage and 29 RBI. Junior OF Cara Woods hit .302 with Smith finishing the year at .289. She had a .301 career batting average (132-for-439).

Freshman Rachael Liguori paced ESU's pitching staff in innings (116.2), ERA (3.60) and strikeouts (87) while issuing just 23 walks. She ranks second on ESU's freshman list in strikeouts and fourth in innings pitched.

Game 1 – L 5-2

Suits held Shippensburg to three earned runs in 5.1 innings in her final career start, and ESU tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning before Shippensburg reclaimed the lead.

McKay and Smith had RBI singles in the inning, Smith's coming with two outs. Junior 2B Jamie Smith was hit by a pitch and Thomas singled to give the Warriors two baserunners off Estep, and both came around to score.

Maddie Justice gave Ship a 3-2 lead with a one-out double in the bottom of the fifth, and the Lady Raiders loaded the bases and scored two runs in the sixth.

McNeil was 2-for-4 with a double and McKay, Rebecca Smith, Jamie Smith and sophomore OF Sierra Wagner also had hits for ESU.

Game 2 – L 6-3

The Warriors led 3-2 through 2.5 innings before Ship scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the nightcap.

ESU got to Liz Parkins (2.2 IP, 3 runs) in the first as Jamie Smith drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Thomas and scored on an RBI double by McKay.

Ship went ahead 2-1 in the second on three hits and a wild pitch, but ESU answered in the third.

Junior OF Kacie Killeen had a leadoff single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Smith and scored on an RBI single by Thomas. McKay and Rebecca Smith both singled, and Wagner had an RBI single up the middle to put the Warriors ahead 3-2.

Ship scored twice in the fourth to go ahead, including an unearned run, and added two more runs in the fifth.

Makenzie Lynn picked up the win for the Lady Raiders with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Sophomore Allison Mende (3.1 IP, 2 runs) and Liguori (2.2 IP, 3 earned runs) handled the pitching for ESU.

Thomas and McKay both had two hits for the Warriors.
