Box ScoreWEST CHESTER - Sophomore forward
Brielyn Hackett scored the game-winning goal with 2:18 left in the second overtime, lifting No. 16-ranked East Stroudsburg University to a 2-1 (2OT) upset at No. 6 West Chester and moving the Warriors into a tie for first in the PSAC women's soccer standings on the final day of September.
ESU (7-1, 7-1 PSAC) set a school record with its seventh consecutive PSAC win, rallying from a 1-0 halftime deficit as senior forward
Courtney Keller scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute before Hackett delivered the game-winner.
The Warriors worked overtime for the second time in seven days to tie West Chester atop the PSAC standings through the first half of the conference schedule. Last Wednesday, sophomore back
Laurel Neira, the reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week, scored both goals and had the game-winner 6:51 into the first OT in a 2-1 win over Bloomsburg at Eiler-Martin Stadium. ESU won 4-1 at Lock Haven on Saturday.
Freshman goalkeeper
Jules Harris made five saves for ESU and Alex Srolis had seven saves for West Chester (8-1, 7-1), which had outscored its opponents 18-2 in an undefeated 8-0 start to the 2014 season.
ESU held a 14-13 advantage in shots and West Chester had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
West Chester took its 1-0 lead with just three seconds left in the first half on a goal by Haley Mangiaruga, whose sister Michelle was a two-time IWLCA All-Region lacrosse player for ESU in 2010 and 2011.
Keller, who scored two goals in Saturday's 4-1 win at Lock Haven, had her ninth career goal to tie the game with just under 12 minutes left on an assist from sophomore forward
Hannah Gombos.
Hackett's game-winner was her third goal of the season, ranking second on the Warriors with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists) while coming off the bench in all but one of ESU's eight games. Keller leads the Warriors with 10 points on four goals and two assists.
ESU's seven-game overall winning streak is the second-longest in school history behind the 1994 PSAC championship team, which had 13 consecutive wins.
The Warriors notched their third-ever win over a team ranked in the NSCAA DII Top 10, and knocked off a top 10 team on the road for the first time. They beat No. 6 West Chester, 2-1, in 2012 and posted a 2-0 win over No. 3 Slippery Rock in 2004, both at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
ESU has won two of its last three games against West Chester after the Golden Rams were 15-0-2 in 17 meetings from 2003 through 2011.
The Warriors will play one of their two non-conference games on Saturday, hosting Bloomfield at 2 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. They return to PSAC action at Clarion on Wednesday, October 8.
