EAST STROUDSBURG - Freshman outside hitter Desiree Claxton had 20 kills, senior Abby Welch added 15 and junior Maddie Hutchison contributed 32 digs, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 3-1 win over Wilmington and a 3-1 weekend in the ESU Invitational at Koehler Fieldhouse.
 
ESU fell 3-2 to American International on Saturday morning, outlasted Le Moyne 3-2 later on Saturday and posted a 3-0 win over Bowie State on Sunday afternoon. Claxton had a team-high eight kills against Bowie State.
 
Claxton (51 kills, .224) and Welch (46 kills, .209) led the Warriors attack over the weekend. Senior Annabelle Charlton had 25 kills, a team-high 68 assists and 27 digs, and senior middle blocker Elizabeth Higley (20 blocks) and sophomore Hanna Bergen (14) paced the Warriors at the net. Hutchison had 93 digs, an average of 6.20 per set.
 
ESU hosts another 12-match tournament next weekend (Friday through Sunday). The Warriors will play Saturday at 10 a.m. (vs. Barry) and 6 p.m. (Southern New Hampshire), and Sunday at 10 a.m. (Bloomfield) and 2 p.m. (Pace).
 
 
Bowie State - W 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-17)
 
Claxton had team-highs in kills (eight) and attacks (29) for ESU. Freshman middle blocker Sarah Fillman had six kills on six attacks and freshman outside hitter Rosa Veliky had five kills.
 
Sophomore Abby Koval had a team-high eight assists and freshman Lydia Redman had seven.
 
 
Wilmington - W 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20)
 
ESU won the first two sets and held off the Wildcats in the fourth to finish the weekend 3-1.
 
Along with big games from Claxton and Welch, Charlton had nine kills, 23 assists and nine digs. Freshman Erica Cunningham added 17 assists and nine digs.
 
Higley had seven blocks and Bergen had six, as ESU recorded 14.0 team blocks.


Game Notes
* Hutchison went over the 1,000-dig mark for her career. She is the 9th ESU player with 1,000+ digs since 1990.
* Claxton's 20 kills are 3rd-most by an ESU player in a 4-set, 25-point match (since 2008). Abby Welch had 22 at Millersville in 2013, and Kaitlin Behrens had 21 vs. Glenville State in 2012.
* Hutchison's 32 digs are 3rd-most by an ESU player in a 4-set, 25-point match. Lindsey Lullo had 36 twice against Shepherd in 2009.
