Martin Leads Warriors Women’s Basketball to 61-35 Win at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE - Senior forward Jessica Martin had 22 points and eight rebounds and moved into the top 10 in career scoring in school history as East Stroudsburg University posted a 61-35 win at Millersville in PSAC East women's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gymnasium.

Millersville's 35 points are the fewest by a PSAC opponent against the Warriors since a 55-28 win at Cheyney on February 5, 2000.

ESU led by six (24-18) at halftime and held a 29-25 advantage with 16:25 remaining before finishing the game on a 32-10 run.

Martin scored 12 points in ESU's 14-0 run in a five-minute stretch that pushed the lead to 43-25 with less than 12 minutes remaining.

ESU (9-11, 8-8) moves into sole possession of fourth in the PSAC East with six games remaining in the conference schedule.

Millersville (10-11, 7-9) lost its seventh straight game, and sixth straight since leading scorer Carly Gallagher (15.5 ppg) suffered a season-ending injury.

Alayah Hall led the Marauders with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Warriors held Millersville to 28.3 percent (13-for-46) from the field, 1-for-10 from the three-point, and forced 23 turnovers. The Marauders were also just 9-for-20 at the foul line and ranked last in the 18-team PSAC in free throw percentage (56.5) entering the weekend.

Junior center Michelle Boggs scored 10 points and sophomore forward Allison Howard had nine to give the Warriors 41 points from their primary three post players.

Martin had her seventh career game with 20+ points and second of the season. She shot 8-for-12 from the field, 6-for-8 at the foul line and scored 22 of ESU's first 43 points. She also added four of ESU's 18 steals.

Martin finished the day with 1,118 career points, surpassing Lori Gruver (1,111 from 1979-83) for 10th in school history. She holds the school record and ranks fifth in PSAC history in career blocks (257) and ranks fifth in career rebounds (785).

ESU closed the first half on an 11-2 run over the final eight minutes to lead by six at halftime. Overall, Millersville scored 19 points in the final 28 minutes of game action.

ESU, which fell 52-49 to Millersville at Koehler Fieldhouse on November 22, is 4-5 in the last nine meetings with the Marauders after going 3-26 in their previous 29 contests. The Warriors won 49-48 at Millersville in the first round of the PSAC Tournament last year on a three-pointer by Ryann Fiascki with 1.9 seconds left.

The Warriors host Shippensburg (13-8, 9-6) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Raiders are coming off a 65-64 home loss to PSAC East leader Bloomsburg on Saturday, ending a six-game winning streak.
