EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University is set to host five basketball games over Thanksgiving weekend, as the women's program hosts the 51th Annual Pocono Classic on Saturday and Sunday, followed by the men's team against PSU-Lehigh Valley at 5 p.m.
The Pocono Classic will feature two games on both days with Chestnut Hill, Glenville State and Philadelphia University also participating.
Action gets underway Saturday at 1 p.m. with Glenville State vs. Philadelphia U, followed by ESU vs. Chestnut Hill at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Chestnut Hill and Glenville State tip off at 1 p.m., followed by ESU and Concordia at 3 p.m.
ESU's men's team (4-1) hosts PSU-Lehigh Valley (0-3) on Sunday at 5 p.m.
In the Pocono Classic, ESU (0-4) is led by junior forward
Allison Howard (13.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg), who has paced the Warriors in scoring against Bowie State (18 points) and Seton Hill (16 points) through the first four games.
Senior center
Michelle Boggs averages 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds, including a career-high 22 points with 10 rebounds at IUP last Saturday.
Senior guards
Tyeca Reviere (5.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.0 apg) and
Melissa Poderis (7.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 3.7 apg) lead the Warriors in minutes played and have started all four games. Sophomore guard
Imani Brown (8.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg) has made three starts in the backcourt.
Junior forward
Madison Tamburini has posted 6.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
The women's tournament is in its 27th year. Philadelphia University will be participating for the third time (also 1989-90 and 2013-14), while Chestnut Hill and Glenville State will be appearing for the first time.
Glenville State (3-1) has won three straight and is the top scoring team in DII, averaging 97.5 points per game. Sophomore guard Paris McLeod (15.8 ppg, 4.3 apg, 2.7 spg), junior guard Brittany Jackson (13.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg), junior guard Aanise Barnes (12.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and sophomore guard Tayana Stewart (11.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg) all average double figures. Senior center La'Shaughn Jones (8.0 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and freshman forward Courtney Davis (6.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) are the top front court players.
Glenville has wins vs. Saint Augustine's (97-65), Shepherd (108-82) and Fairmont State (89-76) after a 117-96 loss to Johnson C. Smith in its season opener. The Pocono Classic records for points in a game (106) and tournament (193) were set by Shippensburg last year.
Philadelphia U (3-2) has also won three straight games entering the weekend. Senior guard Bria Young (13.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.8 apg), senior forward Mary Newell (13.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg), senior forward Tori Arnao (12.8 ppg, 12.0 rpg) and sophomore guard Rachel Day (9.0 ppg) are the top contributors for the Rams.
Philadelphia U has wins vs. USciences (46-42), Bridgeport (62-51) and Georgian Court (62-50) in the last week following losses to two of the top teams in the East Region, Queens (65-58) and Bentley (69-60), to open the year.
Chestnut Hill (1-1) fell 79-61 at Kutztown on Tuesday after an 83-50 win vs. Dowling in its season opener. The Griffins are paced by freshman forward Jaeda Wildgoose (13.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg), sophomore forward Nicole Parriski (12.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg), junior guard Caity Kuhnen (12.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and freshman guard Mary Trossi (11.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg). Junior forward Lauren Milligan averages 6.0 points and 10.5 rebounds, and CHC is averaging 57.0 rebounds in its first two games.
An All-Tournament team will be selected comprising an MVP plus five additional All-Tournament honorees.
In the men's game Sunday, ESU faces PSU-Lehigh Valley in a regular series for the Warriors. ESU assistant coach
Anthony Ross '06 was previously head coach for PSU-Lehigh Valley the last three years, leading them to a PSUAC playoff berth last season.
Redshirt senior guard Will Brown (17.8 ppg) scored 37 points in an 82-71 win at Seton Hill last Sunday, ESU's top scoring game since 2003 and third-best in the last 30 years. Brown is 10th in the PSAC in scoring and leads the conference in three-pointers per game (3.6).
Junior forward Rasheed Moore (14.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and junior forward Steve Harris (13.4 ppg, 10.0 rpg) lead the front court. Harris leads the PSAC in field goal percentage (72.5) and ranks sixth in rebounding.
Moore and senior guard Jamal Nwaniemeka (11.8 ppg) were both named to the preseason All-PSAC East team, and Moore is a two-time all-conference second team selection.
Freshman guard Najee Walls (7.4 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 6.4 apg) had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 assists at Seton Hill on Sunday.
Moore (874), Brown (840) and Nwaniemeka (818) all have more than 800 career points entering December.
