Shea Neal scored the game-winning goal 7:59 into overtime, giving East Stroudsburg University its second straight PSAC women's soccer championship with a 2-1 (OT) win over Edinboro on Sunday at Gannon University.
Neal's game-winner was assisted by freshman forward
Alex Pickett, who scored ESU's first goal in the 31st minute after Edinboro opened the scoring with a goal by Shannon Regan in the 16th minute.
Neal was named the PSAC Tournament MVP for the second straight year. She had the game's only goal in the 78th minute of ESU's 1-0 win vs. Kutztown on November 8, 2014 - one year to the day of Sunday's final.
Junior forward
Brielyn Hackett had the assist on Pickett's game-tying goal in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jules Harris had six saves for ESU (11-6-2), which claims the PSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The complete NCAA field will be released on Monday.
The PSAC championship is the fourth in program history for ESU (1994, 1997, 2014, 2015), tied for the most in conference history with West Chester.
The Warriors are the third school to repeat as PSAC champion and the first since West Chester (2006-07, 09-10). Lock Haven won three straight from 1998-00.
ESU, the No. 7 seed, is tied for the lowest seed to win a PSAC women's soccer championship with Slippery Rock, which won as the No. 7 seed in 2012.
Edinboro (14-7) was the No. 4 seed and was seeking its first-ever PSAC championship. The Fighting Scots won their quarterfinal game vs. Kutztown, 1-0, and knocked out No. 1 seed Gannon, 3-1, in the semifinals.
The Warriors advanced on Tuesday in penalty kicks at West Chester, 4-3, after a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes and won their semifinal game vs. Slippery Rock, 2-0, on Friday.
ESU is the first team in PSAC women's soccer history to win a conference championship without a first team all-conference selection. Neal, junior back
Laurel Neira and sophomore midfielder
Sammi Ortiz were all named to the second team this season. Neal was named to the first team in both of her first two years.
The victory is the 100th career win for head coach
Rob Berkowitz, who guided ESU to a 20-1-1 record and its first-ever PSAC regular season title last fall. ESU is 7-3-3 in PSAC Tournament games under Berkowitz, reaching the PSAC Tournament in six of his nine seasons, including five semifinal appearances.
Just over a week ago, ESU hosted No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Gannon in its regular season finale on October 30 needing a win to guarantee a PSAC Tournament spot. The Warriors trailed 1-0 through 60 minutes, then scored four goals in the next 18:43 in a 4-2 victory to gain a spot in the field.
Five players have started all 19 games this season for the Warriors in Neal, Ortiz, Neira, senior forward
Sammi Jo Hughes (eight goals, two assists) and junior back
Andrea Polanco.
Hackett (four goals, one assist) and Pickett (two goals, two assists) have also been regulars in the lineup at forward, and senior midfielder
Syrandin Deere Vester (two goals) formed the midfield partnership with Neal and Ortiz for the second straight season.
Center backs Neira, a two-time All-PSAC selection, and Polanco are joined on the back line by junior
Hannah Gombos (17 starts) at right back and freshman
Kyra Dubost (18 starts) at left back.
Harris, in her second season as a starter in goal, has a 1.09 goals against average and .806 save percentage. She was named to the All-PSAC second team as a freshman.
Seven starters from last year's team - Harris, Neira, Gombos, Deere Vester, Neal, Ortiz and Hughes - join forward Terri Meierhofer (1994, 1997) as the only ESU players to start on two PSAC championship teams.
