ESU Women’s Basketball Posts 70-61 Win at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA - Junior forward Allison Howard had 18 points and 12 rebounds, freshman guard Noelle Powell scored 13 points and senior center Michelle Boggs had 12 points and 13 boards, leading East Stroudsburg University to a 70-61 win at Holy Family in non-conference women's basketball on Monday night.

Howard had her third straight double-double for ESU (3-7), including eight points in a 17-3 run to open the game. The Warriors led 36-16 at halftime, then held off Holy Family (6-4) after the Tigers cut the lead to a single point (59-58) with 5:37 remaining.

ESU responded with an 8-0 run, including a three-point play by Powell and two straight baskets by Boggs, and held Holy Family to 1-for-13 with three turnovers in the final 5:30.

Holy Family shot just 25.0 percent (17-for-68) for the game and was 3-for-31 with nine turnovers in the first half.

Erin Fenningham scored 26 points for Holy Family, going 5-for-15 from the field (4-for-9 from three) and 12-for-16 at the foul line, but was the only Tiger in double figures.

Howard capped ESU's opening run with a pair of three-pointers on consecutive possessions and scored 10 points as the Warriors led 19-8 after the first quarter. ESU won the second quarter, 17-8, maintaining a double-figure lead throughout and pushing its advantage to 20 on buckets by sophomore forward Rebecca Rutkowski and senior guard Tyeca Reviere in the final minute.

Holy Family briefly cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter, but ESU led 57-45 going into the final stanza after a jumper by Howard with two seconds left.

The Tigers started the fourth quarter with a 13-1 stretch, including two three-pointers by Fenningham, before Powell scored and was fouled the next time down to give ESU a 62-58 advantage. Boggs scored on the Warriors' next possession and again two minutes later for a 66-58 lead with 2:53 remaining.

ESU was 4-for-12 at the foul line in the final 1:30, but Holy Family didn't score from the field until there were 11 seconds remaining.

Howard, averaging 15.7 points and 7.8 rebounds through 10 games, had her third double-double of the season and the eighth of her career. She had 19 points and 13 rebounds in a 74-67 loss to Edinboro and 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 59-50 win vs. Mercyhurst on December 4-5.

She and Boggs are the first ESU teammates with double-doubles in the same game since Howard (12 points, 12 rebounds) and Jessica Martin (21 points, 11 rebounds) at Virginia Union on December 14, 2013.

Powell tied her season-high with 13 points. Reviere scored seven and added four steals, senior guard Melissa Poderis had five points and five rebounds, junior guard Rachel Falkowski had five points and sopohomore guard Imani Brown had three points and six boards.

ESU outrebounded Holy Family, 54-53.  The Warriors shot 37.1 percent (26-for-70), their second-best mark of the season. Both teams committed 13 turnovers.

The Warriors will look for their third straight win as they host Cheyney on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse.
